  • The Liberal Gun Club backs a wide-open interpretation of the Second Amendment that lets law-abiding citizens possess just about any type of gun. But that's where its similarity to the NRA ends.

"If I walk into a gun store with an Obama T-shirt - which I wouldn't wear, because he's too conservative - I don't fit," joked Eric Wooten, a longtime California Democratic Party activist and member of the Liberal Gun Club.

Wooten and Hoeber have banded together not only to reinforce their love of a sport and a hobby, but to flex political clout from the left side of the spectrum.

    Isolation among liberals

    Living in the Bay Area, it took a while to find them. She {Marlene Hoeber, a feisty, tattooed, transgender, a self-described feminist, a queer activist - and a crack shot with her favorite "toys," guns of just about every kind} and other members acknowledge that left-leaning gun lovers are one group that's still very much "in the closet."{Given her lifestyle choice, I can't for the life of me understand THAT statement}

Larry, a retired Episcopal priest who declined to give his last name for publication - he's worried about what friends and co-workers may think - says he found the club "the same way everyone else here did: I Googled 'liberal' and 'guns.' "

The Liberal Gun Club is "the only place that would have me," he said with a laugh, while loading his weapon. "A lot of us here have been kicked out of other gun forums because of our liberal views."

Yikes !!! I guess that the old Arabic proverb "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" applies here.

Well that is certainly a twist.

I'm torn between calling it shooting themselves in the foot and the idea that they are, with respect to guns, espousing a traditional liberal view as opposed to the leftist theatrics we see in the D party. It must be some interesting mental acrobatics to say you are left of the current administration and pro-gun.

Not really. There is more to most people than agreeing 100% with the party line on every topic. I mean, I've met pro-choice republicans...

He's not a liberal.... he's a socialist or Communist.. Obama is to his right ..
He will not own up to it because he needs to hide..

Now what make you think that the mainstream D care about this leftest loon... I repeat Obama is on his right. They will disown him as well.

These are real threat.. ... the leftist that take up the gun... not to protect and defend law and order but to tear it down..

No this guy is either full of it when he says Obama is to conservative or he is very close to RCP in spirt and maybe someday action....

I would not want him in my gun club either...

And the Democrats will ignore him just as they ignore us.

    Nothing gained in my view

Sure I get that and I read in the article where they correlate pro-gun with pro-choice. While I understand that argument on paper, saying you are in favor of an expanded state but not in favor of expanded state CONTROL is contradictory. I can safely say that I lean liberal in many of my views but I don't attempt to reconcile a liberal viewpoint with current leftist politics since they are entirely different.

In the end they can believe and fight for whatever they want. If they are bringing more gun owners into the fold and teaching safe and proper handling then it's a net positive. At some point they will be faced with a choice though.

More power to them! America needs more liberal, gay, female, and minority gun owners.
It's often too easy for the hoplophobes to stereotype gun owners and that needs to change.
I've actually donated money to the Pink Pistols before (www.pinkpistols.org).

+1, the perception that were all spawn of Bubba well Bubba'ing his guns for huntin dar bar n der ... has to change. The more educated and vocal gun owners that show their displeasure and vote accordingly the better.

Personally I find myself in the center of the spectrum... and i would gladly support any organization that teaches proper safety and advodacy without the politcal hubbabloo from the NRA that pushes some people away from Guns and Hunting.

I have taken some of my extremely liberal friends from NYC shooting before for the first time and changed their views on shooting and hunting even in the land of bloomberg.

Liberal gun owner to me is an oxymoron.
I can understand that someone can have a liberal ideology and like guns even though the liberal ideaology doesn't make sense to me, but to support liberals in politics is like shooting yourself in the foot.

And just who is claiming all this about the NRA... oh right the left...

OK make your own lobbying organisation. If half the things the left claims about the NRA were true I would not be a member either.

The big lie works well with liberals today..

So any chance you tried to educate your friends about all the lies about the NRA?

That would do more that just getting them to change their minds.. they need to stop falling for the big lie technique..

    Like Obama care for example...

I was trying to figure out how to respond to his post but you nailed it.

I only care how they vote.

They can say all that they want but I will bet they will vote for a candidate that will give them 8 of 10 things even if they were against guns. Whereas Conservatives usually will hold their candidates to what they preach for the most part and guns have to be part of the conversation. Conservatives are more likely to vote for a fiscally liberal conservative with good gun policies than the other way around.

Have you read the latest NRA magazine? 55% of it is comprised of ads and statements about how [insert politician here] is out to grab your guns....

Holy bat turds batman... I get that Owemalley and others have urinated in our cornflakes here in Maryland, and I support those that are fighting them in courts currently as it is an infringement of our constitutional rights; however, how as an organization that receives so much negative press coverage, is it possible for the NRA to win the hearts and minds of the next generation?

I grew up hunting, boy scouts, summer camps, etc... And shooting was part of it all but what about these kids now that their only exposure to firearms and safe handling is Call of Duty? Or some other Role Playing First Person Shooter?

Get your kids away from the PS3/4, X-box, etc. take them shooting in fact invite their friends and parents... you need to win people with practical use and de-demonizing said nasty gun.

So any chance you tried to educate your friends about all the lies about the NRA? ...

I actually take a lot of offense to this, I educate my friends on safe handling and use of firearms... not a political agenda, with the thought that they will use the information I have afforded them in their voting the next time. Their opinions and views are their own and not mine, and it’s our constitutional right to vote how we see fit.

And Lies come from the Right and Left, it's up to you to decide what lie you want to believe today, the only truth you have it the truth that you find in red while reading the works of Peter, Paul, and the other apostles. You might find some use from that book, and a liberal use of a spell check.:innocent0

No kids... no use for them. Dont care how you vote.. care how you think. As an atheist libertarian born Jewish I think I will skip Perter Paul and Mary... but I will not let the big lie clowd my judgement...

I even reserve the right not to be limited in my spelling :lol2:..

I only teach folks to shoot if i am willing to be responsible for their conduct. So far most of them are already shooters....:innocent0

At first glance this sure appears to be a "plus" for our cause. Our cause being strictly 2A, and not all the other endless Left vs. Right warfare.

    From the comments section:
i think 'magazine capacity restrictions' are a good idea ... any magazine over 150 pages is just too large
