James Williams’s Shinbu and Hisshou Short Swords

Bugei swords are probably the best overall value in Japanese-style edged weapons and I have owned complete 3-sword sets of both their Dragonfly and Samurai series swords in the past, only selling them to ultimately fund higher quality ones later. Other than having a custom sword forged and built to your knowledgeably exacting specs with Japanese materials, Bugei and Citadel swords are really your best bets. Bugei swords look a little nicer than Citadels but Citadels are built and toleranced more carefully and are the only non-custom ones I still possess('cause I'd trust my life to ANY of 'em). Either of these brands cost about $1200 for katana(24"+), $800 for wakazashi(12"-24") and $500 for tanto(-12" cutting edge).

The Hisshou, Hissatsu and Shinbu are modern interpretations built by CRKT with modern materials and are very nice indeed but IMHO, a tad overpriced for mass machine-made blades. Then again, I wouldn't worry about actually using and scratching up a CRKT blade and then resharpening it, as needed.
