A coworker who is much more into shotguns more or less said the same thing about the shell expanded length and how it can generate over pressurizing conditions. I got a couple boxes of 2.75" slugs today so all is well.

This where a chamber gauge comes in handy.
Even on some 2 and 3/4 guns, it will detect an abrupt cone which can cause higher pressure like what has already been mentioned or at the least be indicative of less than ideal pattern potential.

That's true. Without the proper forcing cone, the pattern can turn to trash.

It's a sweet little shotgun, weighs less than 6 pounds and really points well. Shoot a lot of sporting clays with it for fun. Glad I bought it several years ago though as the current price is really steep.
