Is .40 S&W DOA?

Just came back from the gun shop,
(was looking for a Beretta PX4 SC in .40)
and the manager said he won't stock .40 pistola's.
The round is dead.?
Only thing selling is 9mm, so that's what he stocks.
I was shocked! Is that the general consensus?
Is .40 and .45 DOA? Did I get that old?

I have heard similar things. It makes for some pretty good deals on the firearms and the ammunition. I carry a G35 .40 cal and 2 G27 .40 cal. IMO the caliber is not dead.

Well, if that rumor makes .40 ammo prices go down, I won’t complain.

There are a LOT of .40’s out there in service, so I doubt you’re going to see them stop making .40 ammo.

One reason the 9mm models have become popular is the compact size options for EDC while maintaining 12 or greater mag capacity.

I have both. The .40 packs a bigger punch and was my EDC for years. It is still my preference when compactness is not an issue. The 9mm weighs less and is more concealable under lightweight clothing. (I can tuck my 9mm wearing a normal sized light colored T-shirt with no printing.)

.40 is all I shoot, out of my Glock 10mm, and have been doing it for years.
Only pistols in this caliber I own are police trade-in Sig P226 and P229.
If it's dead, no big deal, I'll shoot something else. Not gonna sweat!

Yeah I picked up a 1000 rounds of HST Federal Premium .40 cal for a little more than FMJ would cost.

No. It's lost favor due to LE and Military having weaker and less capable members who want less recoil.

Also, early 9mm-adapted guns like the Glock 23 wore faster and sometimes had catastrophic failures with handloads that exceeded recommended pressure. Later gens have been beefed up.

Ballistic performance of modern hollowpoints is close between 9mm-40-45 but not equal.

I'm happy to have 13 .40 HST's over 15 9mm HSTs.

That‘s only part of it. Improvements in bullet technology had a part plus 9mm is cheaper to buy in mass quantities and that’s big deal in budgetary terms. The military‘s commitments to NATO standardization plays a role as well as the FBI’s decision to go with the 9mm influences many law enforcement agencies whether their needs align with FBI protocols or not.

The choices are limited. I'm really not
comfortable with a 9mm. A lot more
choices in .45 sub compact, but that means
adding another caliber. I was hoping to

but I'm looking at balistics and gel test videos

9 is just the trendy new round. 45 and 40 had its decade or decades.

357sig and 45acp are my 2 carry cals.

I dont own a 9 but my girl recently got me a lonewolf conversion barrel for my glock 32 just so i can practice cheaper and she can actually get trigger time on a handgun.

Honestly idc if a store only stocks 9mm, i do my research before coming in and just order a better cal gun LOL

There are a lot of police still carrying .40 cal. Until all those contracts dry up, I expect it will remain a viable round. Hell, police never widely adopted .45acp and the military dropped it 40 years ago. It's still common as dirt.

.40 has its place as an easy way into Major power factor for USPSA competition shooting without having to rely on handloading for 9mm.

I assume you were only thinking of single action when you typed that?

Because a decocked DA pistol would be 'more trustworthy' than striker fired. Not that either is going to go off spontaneously, but there would have to be a whole heck of a lot go wrong all at the same time before you'd get a ND from a DA pistol with the hammer down.

Not as long as you can feed it. The last time I was in Bass Pro there was a sh.t load of .40 cal on the shelf... several hundred boxes at least.

The only things they had more of was 9mm and 5.56.
