down my way, there is a store that sells mosins. they are in a barrel with some sks's and some old single shot milsurps. i personally would feel bad if i talked a novice shooter into buying a 50 dollar gun out of a barrel and it blows a piece of his face off.

Not a novice shooter. New to owning a larger caliber rifle. Had a Mosin at one time and it did nothing for me. Just don't like 'em. Can't beat the price, but I want something a little better.

I went through the same dilemma last year. There are a few variables involved to identify your needs. Is this an offhand rifle or bench rest shooter? The Savages and Rem 700s are so close you cannot go wrong with either.
However, it's my impression there's more aftermarket support for the R700.

    I own a Savage.

forget about the boltguns...Go with a classic SA M1A rifle with a nice walnut stock.

The Fun to shoot PSL-54 in 7.62x54R

The PSL54 is the only high powered rifle I shoot regularly. This is mainly due to the affordability of 7.62x54R ammunition. The Remy 700/ Savage boltguns that I own..can be classified as safe queens.
