How long to keep canned goods?

  • If it smells and looks fine when you open it I would say go ahead and use it.
    I have used my home canned tomato sauce after 2-3 years on the shelf.
    This...your nose will let you know if it's turned. Same applies for commercial canned goods. Most have a shelf life of 5 years. I've eaten older..if you open it and it smells bad toss it. I joined the Navy in 1981. We had canned C Rats that were from Korea and WW2. I ate them a few times. Never got sick..
