Got to play with my Dead Air Mask some over the weekend. I shot about 15 different types of ammo through it to see what is quiet and if there are any POI issues. I was using my Ruger 10/22 with and without a bolt lock.

First off, it is super quiet with anything from 910 FPS to 1050 FPS. Even standard velocity 1070 FPS is backyard friendly if your neighbors are 100 yards away. My 10/22 is tuned to operate with standard velocity ammo and it also functioned fine with the 910 FPS stuff. I didn't notice any difference in POI whether the bolt was locked or not but there was a little noise out of the port.

I coat my baffles with spray on red grease and they clean easily by hand after spraying with a degreaser. The carbon on the lower baffles needed a little more wiping but still came off easy. I need to order a new ultrasonic cleaner as mine took a jump off the shelf after the shelf was bumped earlier in the year. :sad20:

Just in case anyone wonders if a suppressor does anything with HV loads, CCI Minimags are still loud when shot through the Mask. ;)

Nice write up! Thank you for posting! I'm waiting for my Dead Air Mask! I also have Ruger 10/22 with thread barrel and Mark IV Target with thread barrel. Good to know that the CCI minimags are still loud. Good thing I have decent supply of CCI std velocity, lol!

I have the Sparrow and mine seems to be consistently quiet up to Standard velocity, as well. A little first round pop is all I have to groan about, but it's a known thing with the Sparrow. I'm kinda still itching with the idea of a Ruger Silent-SR, as they seem to get nothing but good press, and I like Ruger stuff to almost a fanboy level.

Have a Mask, sounds awesome, only problem is the mount unscrewing from the tube when taking it off a host. I used to do the silicone oil thing to keep baffles clean, but stopped, they sound best after a couple hundred rounds of dirt anyway, and takes a couple bricks before there is much buildup. I use an ultrasonic with the baffles in a bag with CLR and they come out spotless with pretty much 0 effort, brush out the tube, and inside of the mount and cap.

Ended up getting a Rugged Oculus that I like better. That one sounds just as good full size, but can be configured in a tiny 3.25" K configuration too, mount doesn't come loose, and it's all steel, so steel brushes for the tube clean easier, and the simpler baffle design cleans up a bit easier and takes more rounds before it gets excessive buildup.

The Sparrow's FRP is pretty bad, most monocore cans have a lot of pop. Pretty much everything has a louder first round to some degree, but my mask is pretty good, barely noticeable with some ammo. Most other cans are somewhere in between, K baffles tend to have less than cone, which is way less than monocore. Running a little wet helps eliminate it too. The mask sounds stupid good wet, especially on a pistol, grease or gel work, but are messy.

Amen to that. I think I get more grease back in my action than goes out the muzzle. However, my baffles clean up super fast just by shaking them around in a jar of kerosene. ;)

This is after 30min in a cheap 3L ultrasonic with the baffles in a bag of CLR. Previously a few thousand rounds through each of them and no pretreating. Oculus in the middle, mask on the right.

    22lr suppressor for guys.

I'm waiting for my Dead Air Mask to be release from jail. I'm wondering how quiet it would be on three firearms I have.

    Ruger 10/22
    CZ 452
    Ruger MK iv target

Ammo on hand that will be used is: CCI Std Velocity, CCI Mini Mag 40gr solid, and Wolf Match Target.

How would you rate the quietness from each firearm?

I would expect the 22lr suppressor would cause enough back pressure to dirty up the semi-auto more?

I have the 10/22 with an 18 inch barrel and a 22/45 with a 4 inch barrel. To me, with 91- FPS subs I can't distinguish the difference. With standard velocity CCI, the pistol sounds a little louder. Both are neighborhood quiet.

If you have the 22 or 24 inch barrel on your CZ, you can probably shoot the 910's and they will sound like an air rifle. I had several CZ's in the past and I shot standard velocity through them and they sounded like cap guns.

    John,
Thank you for your replay. My Ruger 10/22 is 16.5". My CZ 452 is 22", the Ruger MK IV target is 5.5" barrel.

    I thought sub-sonic ammo wouldn't cycle a semi-auto?

CCI standard velocity stays subsonic, whisper quiet and cycles both my TCR22 and my Mark IV.

CCI also makes a “semi-auto quiet” which is like 840fps. It is a TAD quieter then the standard velocity, and it cycles both my TCR22 and my Mark IV. Honestly though the noise difference isn’t worth the price difference. Both are subsonic and stupid quiet.
