So I hope I got a good deal on this one. I should have researched these rifles a little more. I have watched a bunch of videos now and made some conclusions. It has the wrong rear sight a later model. It has some of the wood missing around the hammer. I'm going to have a gun smith check it out before I shoot it.

Love these. Nice pickup. There was a company that bought a bunch of these and parts. Bannerman? I wanted one of these but I couldn’t consume all the info at once to make a buy. I need to do more research. Glad they are still around at shows. Hope it shoots well! I gotta get one if they are still reasonable price shooters out there.

This is THE GUY on Springfield Trapdoors. He is at every MACA show I have gone to and I actually purchased mine from him.

If you don't get what you need out of the guy in Essex, If you were to take a bunch of pics, he would be able to tell you things.
Seeing as his classifieds items are all sold, me may just be there to sell his book.

That’s a drag it got the chip out of the stock at the lock plate.
Those things are built to such a high degree of craftsmanship there is zero gap in the in letting.
So close water couldn’t get through to the rear of the lock plate I’d say.
A well done /execured repair would tidy that area right up.

What model year is it 1873 or 1884?
Hard to tell from your pictures, but it definitely looks like a 1884. If so, That would be the correct Buffington sight, the trigger looks like it is serrated. The 1873 trigger is smooth. Also the “door”looks thicker than a 1873 model.

For a shooter the 1884 is more desirable, IMHO. The action is a little stronger, and that buffington sight is awesome.

According to the serial number it was made in 1879 so it might be made up of parts which is fine with me. I intend to shoot it.

I did this as an impulse buy. I never thought about a trapdoor before. If I was smart I would have done my research then gone looking as it turns out I think I cleared the hurdle of getting a good one. For the Record I paid 525 for this. It's insane how much milsurp is now. 650 for a swiss k 31 that has no connection to anything historical? I'll take this any day.

Check the firing pin to make sure its not munged up, or stuck. I would also be wary of a too good to be true pricing. Theirs a lot of surfaces there to contend with for a repair. At least the chips in not much of a critical area for strength so it should work out.

Well the firing pin is fine they showed me how that works at the store. Said if its stuck don't close the trapdoor with a round in. Curious how they would fix that. Make some kind of mold ? Sand it down till every surface is smooth?
