It’s like one of those “pick two” riddles.

    Glass quality
    Magnification range
    Cheap

    Pick two.
It really is. The only good news is that most people vastly overestimate their need for magnification, and once you get honest with yourself and scale that back, things get a little easier to figure out.

It amazes me how on one hand guys get 1-6X LPVO scopes for their AR's and state that's good to 500 yards. Then other guys get 12X scopes for their 22LR bolt guns to shoot at 100 yards.

I mean, both of these things can be legitimately true, it often depends on target size. Plenty of 3gunners doing excellent work at ~500 with a 1-6x. My implication was more that some people buy these scopes and then never actually shoot at those distances.

    Ahh - makes sense.

relative target size vs field of view. On my 3 gun stuff I just need to hit relatively large plates of 12x12 or 12x24, out to 600 yards max, but have to shoot a lot of paper and 6-12" round and square steel from a few feet out to 100 yards. For this, field of view takes priority, being the relative target size is pretty large. 12x24 at 600, through a 6X basically makes it like shooting that plate at 1X at 100 yards. Now for something like egg shoots with 22s at 100 yards or precision rimfire with a .5" bulls eye at 50 yards you basically have a target a little over 1 MOA, hard to see at 100 yards, takes 12X just to appear the same size as that 12" plate at 600 through a 6X scope. Of course better glass gets a brighter crisper image, and usually easier to hit a clean clear target even if it appears a bit smaller than a greyed out distorted one. The other benefit is less magnification = cleaner field of view and larger exit pupil, so if a scope looks better at the same magnification, less magnification may be needed which alone makes the image cleaner.

I have a Leupold "VX-6HD 4-24X52 CDS-ZL2 SIDE FOCUS ILLUM. FIREDOT DUPLEX" on a Bergara HMR Pro in 300 PRC...that scope MAKES that rifle. It's a perfect match. I've always had the mindset that any rifle is only as good as the optics mounted on it.

Uhhhh…. So I shouldn’t tell you about the Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56 that UPS delivered today for one of my .22’s. :)
