I don't advocate .22 for self defense but this looks like the thing to have in your mouse gun.
The Speer Gold Dot of .22 LR?

I'd be intrigued to see how this stuff handles ground hogs and such. Sadly, it'll be super sonic out of a 16" barrel for sure. But should be subsonic still (probably) out of my 5.5" buckmark. Worth a shot. Literally and figuratively speaking.

That said, that's awfully shallow penetration. Of course 22lr is basically as low as you can go. But frankly, 32acp is a fair amount more effective. 71gr ball is going to have about the same overall wound channel width as these things are expanded. But will penetrate a lot deeper (about 16" for 71gr ball). And some of the few effectively expanding 60gr 32acp hollow points will penetrate about as deep (8-10") and expand more than these will.

And if you wanna go real deep, run 100gr ball which is also likely to go tumbling on impact.

I still wish 32acp was brought back in a bigger way (and not 30SC).

Not that I'd want to jump on 32acp for defensive loads either. But a 32acp rifle with a suppressor and some nice JHP 85gr bullets (made for .327) would probably be a hoot. Hell I'd bet if someone was minded to, a Ruger 10/22 platform could probably be tweaked to run it pretty easily. 6-7 round flush helical mags, higher capacity extended magazines. COAL is actually a hair longer for 22lr than 32acp. Pressures are pretty similar. Overall energy level is higher, but a higher strength recoil spring might be about all it needs.

The question is: if you're shooting a .22, is this the best round to make something bleed?
I've never seen a .22LR mushroom like this. I'd like to see it head to head against the CCI stinger and Federal punch and compare high velocity poor expansion to lower velocity excellent expansion.

Sounds like a study need be done. To me, this ammo looks pretty good. It's probably pricy but so is premium 9mm. I might have to find me some and see if I like.

The best .22lr ammo for self defense is your regular 40 gr CCI MiniMag. It tumbles upon impact. Since it's a solid projectile, it also penetrates a long way.

Having said that, anything less than .45ACP is underpowered.

for small diameter bullets, would it be better if it broke off into separate pieces and created separate paths for lacerations?

Interesting. So plinkster says it doesn’t work reliably in a Beretta Bobcat. Bummer because Federal Punch doesn’t either IME and at least one YouTuber.

I don’t have plans to carry it as it just a fun gun but mini-mags were 100%. Even several standard velocity rounds were 100% so far when the barrel chamber is clean.

tnoutdoors9 did a ballistic gel test on 40gr MiniMags fired from a handgun.

The bullet ended up traveling backwards, indicating it tumbled at least once. It penetrated a solid 13".

I think this is about as good as you can expect from a .22lr. Most other hollow point .22s were way short of the mark.

That's from a 3.5 inch barrel. IME, MiniMags do well in pistols that have barrels around 4 inches. You don't get the same results from the 2" revolvers or 2.5 inch autos.

For most anything less than 380, there just isn't enough power to both penetrate sufficiently and expand for defensive use, so FMJ or solids are about the only way to go. in this case 8" or so of penetration and reliably expansion could be important for small game, but would probably have better luck with heavy solids on people. For game though this could be the best ever, HP 22 rarely expands, and in many the cavity is just to reduce weight to increase velocity. Being rimfire, and a heeled bullet it is less reliable than centerfire, and there tends to be a very small range of bullet shapes that feed reliably.

Yes , Federal Punch .22lr is more better- er than conventional 40gr RN , in that it will penetrate an extra inch or 1.5 in .

Is that enough difference to make a difference ? Not really . Nor to make .22lr a viable choice on purpose .

Squirrels are immortal unless yo head shot.
When I see one of these take out a squirrel with a body shot and not have it scurry 20 yards before dying, then maybe.
Self defense round has to not just be capable of killing, but stop the threat IMO.
I think I might rather have a Taser or a Byrna
    22 > Nothing.
