Capitol Police ramp up hiring to bolster lawmaker protection
A recruitment video, set to dramatic music, casts the department as the 'legislative version' of the Secret Service

The department, which previously only did internal hires for its Investigations Division and Dignitary Protection Division is opening the applicant pool to outside applicants.

Entry-level hires: agent or investigator with a starting salary of more than $81,000 and more than $85,000 after one year of required training.

Lateral hires from other federal law enforcement agencies or the military: $81,000 to $132,000, based on their relevant experience.

They also plan to hire retired federal law enforcement officers or military as drivers for members of Congress, protection for the lawmakers’ homes and to process reports of threats against members. Starting salary for those positions is more than $132,000.

    For comparison:

The annual starting salary for police officers is $66,419; after successful completion of the 18-month probationary period, members earn $72,668; after 5 years of service, members earn $88,327. Recruits begin earning their full salary upon entering the Academy. A top step officer can earn an annual salary of $110,478. Officers who work the evening tour of duty receive a three percent pay differential. Officers working the midnight shift receive a four percent differential.

Police officers (and professional staff) who are certified as fluent in any language other than English, including American Sign Language, receive a $50 stipend per pay period approximately an extra $1,300 per year. To qualify for the stipend, members must pass a certification test administered by an outside contractor.

    Financial Benefits:
    • $25k Hiring Bonus – All new hires will receive $15,000 when they begin their academy training as an initial hiring bonus. Upon successful completion of the academy, all new hires will receive an additional $10,000 at time of academy graduation. This applies to those hired between 4/6/23 and 9/30/23. Please also note that an existing two year obligated service agreement is required from time of graduation. Members who resign from the Department prior to the expiration of the service agreement will be required to repay the hiring bonus.

Nobody who supported "Defund the Police" should be entitled to this protection.

Gee, perhaps if the lawmakers were more honorable, and did the actual jobs we elected them to do, they wouldn't need much security at all. Just a thought.

Did I miss the bonus for removing barricades during an insurrection?
I know the founder of the company that routinely trucks jersey walls down to the Capital during insurrections/events/protests. He makes serious bank.

The more cost effective measure is freeze any new hires and toss each elected congress critter and staffer a carry permit.

They should not have the luxury of having security provided for them.

Does he also deliver pallets of bricks? Asking for a friend.
