Looking to start shooting longer ranges "200 yds" with my AR and newly aquired .308 And was wondering about what Grain ammo to use?? AR is a .223 with 24in Bull Barrel And .308 is a Savage model 10 with 24in Bull Barrel. Any help is certainly appreciated. Thx

What is the twist rate on the barrels? That will be one of the first things to look at when selecting a projectile. You will need a faster twist for the heavier projectiles.

Out of my .308 with a 1:10 twist I am using the 175 grain Sierra Match Kings.

With the .308 you can use 150-175gr bullets for 200yds. I'm using 155gr in mine. The
.223 will depend more on twist rate to determine which bullet weight to use. Slow twist barrels will shoot light bullets well but will not stabilize heavier bullets. 1-8 twist or faster will enable you to use heavy bullets like the 77's or 69's but will still work with the lighter bullet weights.

At 200yds, bullet selection is not a major concern unless terminal performance is needed (even then, a 308 at 200yds will take down just about anything). Majority of performance at that short a range is from the cartridge, length of barrel and precision of rifle/shooter system.

With this said, to optimize performance, I had the following thoughts:

-If you are looking for the tightest groups, then select a flat base bullet. No boat-tail needed at that short a range.
-If you are looking to rid world of varmints, VMax bullets, really light stuff, nice and flat.
-If you are looking for performance on game, AMax is a great choice at good price point. AMax is also good choice for targets.

Conclusion from me: Hornady Amax in 155 or 168gr range - either would be great choice at good price point.

    Good luck!

Feed the 308 anything my 308 likes 155-168. The 223 will take somw trial and error most likely the best accuracy will be from 69-77gr bullets.

    The 1 in 10 .308 will shoot the 168 or 178 A-Max just fine.

    The 1 in 8 .223 69 or 77 Sierra, 77 Nosler, 75 BTHP Hornady or the 52 A-Max if 200 yards is all you're doing.

200 Yds Is the max at ACG And that's one of the only places I shoot for now. Eventually I would like to shoot some "Beginner Matchs" For lack of a better term.

Like others.. I have a .308 with a 1:10 twist and it shoots 175's SMK's good. I "hear" that shooting 168's will get you a little better groupings under 350yrds or so, but I've not noticed much of a differenct at all.

Try Federal Gold Medal Match ammo in either 168 or 175 gr and see what it does. If your looking for hunting rounds, the hornady TAP stuff in 168 did a good job on my deer. Its an Amax bullet.

I've bought some sierra game kings in 180gr to try out in my rifle...heard GREAT things about them also.
