I bought a Boito 12GA O/U the other day at the Carney Gun Show. Took it out to Loch Raven, immediately ran into two issues.
Issue #1.) Load shell in bottom barrel, shoot out the bottom barrel, go to open the breech to pull the shell out, breech won't open. Had to use an above average amount of force to open the breech.
Fixed #1.) After oiling breech area, breech now opens fine after shooting a shell out the bottom barrel.
Issue #2.) Load shell in top barrel; shooting out of this barrel only works half the time. When it doesn't work, you look at the dent in the primer of the shell and it's a bit off center, and possibly not struck hard enough to activate the primer.
Trying to chase down issue #2, I did a bit of poking around -- pulled off the butt stock cap/cover, got access to the 12mm bolt. Pulled the bolt out, separated the action from the butt stock. Cleaned the hell out of all those internals and oiled. Reassembled everything -- now when I dry fire the shotgun, the snap/strike feeling of the firing pin sounds/feels a lot stronger. Wondering if I take it back out to Loch Raven next time, if it's just going to work.
Anyone else run into troubles like this before? I'm thinking if I take the shotgun back out to Loch Raven and still have firing issues on the top barrel, I could go two ways:
Option 1.) Have a gunsmith troubleshoot and repair the issue -- depending on the cost. If it's going to be a lot to repair, I go for option 2.
Option 2.) Call it a loss, lesson learned, and sell it for parts, or sell whole to someone who can repair and make use out of it
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
