I thought I'd ask the question about best magazine loaders for 22s, specifically Ruger 10/22 and in my case, a High Standard HD Military pistol.

I've seen some mag loaders for 22 pistol mags with the thumb button for spring compression, but they seem to be made specifically for the Ruger Mark series and Browning Buckmarks. I'd enjoy shooting that High Standard pistol more if loading the mags weren't such a PITA and hard on my thumbs.

I've got a couple of pistol mag loaders - I picked up the ubiquitous UpLULA from MagLULA, complete with the 1911 adaptor, (not sure if that's absolutely necessary, but it's a nice feature) and I have an AR mag loader I like - the ProMag 5 round loader, which seems to work pretty well, but I don't have a 22 mag loader for either 10/22 or my High Standard.

    What are you guys using?

I don't own any because I don't find the studs that uncomfortable but I have seen folks at steel challenge using what appear to be injection molded and 3d printed magazine specific devices that essentially act as a collar around the mag body and provide a shelf all the way around. One side obviously catches the stud allowing easy compression of the follower spring. I'm sorry I never took any pictures but I suspect some of our resident 3d printing gurus will be along with better information soon.

For 1022s, I likewise don't find them difficult to load but have seen both maglula and butler creek loaders used to good effect by other shooters. I'd say just from casual observation that the butler creek is faster.

    For 10/22’s…
Maglula makes the most foolproof loader.
The Butler Creek loader is the fastest, but not always foolproof.

For pistol mags with a thumb knob, I use my thumb.

Never needed a loader for the 10/22, but for 22 pistols I really like the ergo keyring mini magloader.
Midway sells them and they are real simple and universal - fits all ruger, colt, browning and high standard .22 mags.

The best mag loader for a 22 is: a bag of mags. Lots of mags. Load them at your leisure, slowly, however you like, at home - so you're not doing it in a hurry at the range with cold fingers. I've never had a problem with the studs on the sides of the pistol mags, and since I've been loading 10/22 mags for decades it just doesn't seem like a hardship. It's not like I have tough leather thumbs (operating cameras and keyboards doesn't really build up that thick skin!), but if wonder sometimes if people who get messed up doing it maybe need to re-evaluate how they're going about it. A shooting buddy has a 10/22 loader he uses for those longer 25s, but he always seems to be shaking and otherwise fiddling with it for longer than it takes me to just stick 25 rounds in the mag the old fashioned way and be done with it.

+1 on the Maglula for the 10/22. Agree that it is not necessary for standard mags. Nice for the last 10 rounds on the BX-25 mags. Particularly, if you have dexterity issues or if it is hot/sweaty day.

Great stuff everyone! I think I'm going to get a Maglula 10/22 loader/unloader - that looks like a really nice setup for that.

I might try the loaders for the Ruger Mark series pistols - the ones that grab the thumb stud to press down on the spring. Hopefully those will work for the High Standard magazines.

I have been happy with the Hilljak family of 3D printed loaders for stick mags. There are subtle differences among all of the choices that I think helps them work effectively. I can feed mags for my S&W Model 41 and 61-3 Escort, and Browning Medalist.

I have tried the Champion 10/22 loader with mixed success. I wore one out in short order and when it fails, it fails fast and hard.

I am a big fan of the HCMags package. Can run thru a brick in no time flat. Takes a bit of practice to run it correctly but they have good YouTube videos to demonstrate.

Another vote for the Maglula.. My wife lost function of her right hand about 8 years ago, and she could never load 10/22 mags since then. It's either me - or the Maglula ;-)

I never looked back after finding the Maglula for BX25s. The 22-B (shown below) works great for my Colt Woodsman and Hi Standard Duramatic and HD (I guess great minds think alike :D) mags. The hook works on the Colt mags, but won't quite reach on the HS, there is still enough friction to hold them down well enough to work OK. I guess someone with a 3D printer could whip up a copy, but the HKS is available at gun shows (and online) for a few $ so it wasn't worth it to me to explore other alternatives.
