So I wound up with a flat top M-4gery (Palmetto State Armory). It came with a standard front site post. I like M-16 iron sights just fine so I added a carry handle. I also decided to mess around with an el-cheapo ACOG knock off from AIM Sports. Issues:

    1) If I mount it directly to the rail, I get the front sight post "ghosting," for lack of a better term, in the scope. I haven't tried it at the range yet, but I'm not sure I can see the reticle well enough to shoot .

    2) I put a rail on top of the handle and mounted the scope there. Not entirely unexpectedly with the scope that high, cheek weld went bye-bye. I can see through the scope if I shorten the stock all the way, but contact with the stock is at the jaw level. It's not particularly comfortable.

Suggestions on how to make it work? Some sort of a riser rail instead of the handle?

    Thanks,
    J

I played around with different optics on my 20" A2 and was never really satisfied. I tried low power magnified scopes on an ARMs mount, an Aimpoint M2, and a variable power scopes and didn't like the height over bore issues or the crappy cheek weld. I decided to only use irons on my A1 and A2 uppers. I have a 1x4 scope on one of my flat top uppers and an Aiompoint on another flat top upper and both work much better then trying to crane my neck to see through the scope. If you want optics that don't ghost on the front sight try something a little more powerful. When you crank up the magnification the shadow of the front side will disappear.

If you can't you'd be the first.

I ran my Compact ACOG that way and when I was shooting in class I never noticed the ghosting. Only when zeroing from the bench - even then it didn't interfer with my sight picture.

Yep its the worst solution possible. There are cheeck risers for the CAR stock to get your head up in the right position - but they make it near impossible to use the iron sights (YMMV).

Honestly I'd just go with it mounted to the flattop.

But if it's a real ACOG clone - they are designed to be removed from the mount (via a single screw underneath) and that screw then mounts in the hole in the carry handle. You can still use the irons (if they are pretty much centered) and you only have to lift your head a little to use the scope.

I LOVE that mount. Old school like Sarah Connor in Judgement Day.

Go with an old school Colt 4x20 or a clone of it. Mounts to the handle, but sits low enough to still allow a decent cheek weld. My dad has one on his AR. His is an NCstar clone if I remember right. Works well enough for me.

It's built into the scope. The big ACOGs and a particular series of the Compact ACOGs had it as part of the scope body as fixed carry handles were still prevelant at the time.

I found they worked well for me. Some people had problems with them being to far foreward and would drill a second hole in the carry handle a little further back.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm pretty content with the iron sights so that's probably what I'll keep shooting. The range I shoot at is only 100 yards and I've got to work the sling back in, so I've got plenty to do. I saw the ACOG at Parris Island during a recent visit and was really impressed. (But not $1000+ impressed, hence the knock off...) I may try the riser above, or I may just mount it directly and deal with the ghosting. I'll report back once I get to the range.

    Cheers,
    Jerry
