I thought it would be obvious that 40 grainers were near ideal...
They may be. I think some of the 5.56 varmint rounds are excellent for criminal varmints as well. The only good varmint poontang is dead varmint poontang.

Yes Sir. It's like "whats the better bullet - HST vs Gold Dot vs Golden Saber vs Critical Defense?"
    The correct answer is Yes.

    Pretty much.

I admit my weener is very tiny, so I have very little (fore)skin in the game.

I've always liked heavy for caliber loads, so 147 gr for 9mm. I have also always liked HSTs, DPXs, and gold dots. 147 perform similar to 124 + p, but without the added wear, recoil, and noise.... except for the DPX, which would be 115. The brass fetcher did show dpx expanded more reliably through bone simulant(think sternum or ribcage) than many similar traditional hollowpoints.

Now, I've been picking up a bunch of sig vcrown. They're loaded pretty hot, perform similar to other modern hollowpoints, and are cheap.

Modern defensive ammo is worlds different than it was a decade ago.

Even a decade ago you could still get high quality defensive ammo. Speer Gold Dots and Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty were all available a decade ago. Time flies!

Personally, I would trust and be comfortable carrying Speer Gold Dots, Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty, as well as Federal HST or Hydra-Shok.

Yeah. “Modern” covers a few years. My philosophy (from a scientific standpoint) would be to empty the magazine as fast as I could if there were one assailant.

I bought a lot of Fiocchi 124 gr personal defense HP years ago. I remember doing some research (performance, reliability, cost) and concluded it was the way to go for short barreled 9.

The technology is always changing...what's considered the best today may be an also-ran next year when a different company releases the latest super-bullet.

Barrel length, rate of twist, type of rifling (lands & groove vs. polygonal)...all factor in to how well a bullet penetrates and expands.

The better rounds have an anti-flash additive...cheaper lines don't. Whether that makes a difference in terminal ballistics is arguable.

Basically...get the round that feeds and ejects 100% that is the most controllable for you for quick follow up shots.

There is no silver bullet that does it all.

That would likely get the job done, with any modern ammo.

So…the thing that REALLY drops someone in their tracks is dumping energy into the central nervous system. I like ballistics, the physics and anatomy of gunshot wounds. We are mostly water. Water does not compress.

I carry with hand loaded 115g 9mm Lehigh Xtreme Penetrators. They create a larger temporary wound channel which is a surrogate measure of the energy it dumps into tissues. The more energy you dump, the more likely they are to drop. They leave a slightly larger permanent wound channel. I think that data will prove them to be superior to other designs. At the very least, they will be on par with other offerings.

    Plus, no lead. Environmentally friendly
I have to agree with the doc. I carry Underwood +P Extreme Penetrators in my Sig 365 as it is a short barreled gun and they perform well in ballistic get tests.
