FWIW, and maybe I just got lucky, my Mosquito has never given me trouble. Even cycles reliably with subsonic .22 through a can.

Now that I’ve gone and said that…

    I don't disbelieve all the problems, but likewise Littlefoot44 's is 100% .

Looking to add a 22 pistol to my shootin' irons.

I've been wanting a ruger mark series for quite a while, but am swayed by the Taurus TX22 as well. Since I am all over the board with this, from Sig Mosquito to GSG Firefly, i thought to open it up
to the braintrust and get some opinions.

    Have at me guys!
love my TX 22. replaced spring with ss though. greatly improved, shoots great

I’m interested in the Ruger SR22 anyone have any comments? Please
Yes, the SR22 is a GREAT gun, very dependable, not too heavy, fun to shoot (it's my daughter's fave). When I take a .22 to the range, it's almost exclusively the SR22 along with the Mk III (which is more accurate). Both are unmodified and are very reliable, but the Mk III is harder to break-down/clean. The SR22 is affordable and a lot of fun, and Ruger's customer service in recent years has been second-to-none.

I bought a Sig Mosquito many years ago (already having heard about 'finicky' performance with certain rounds) in order to teach my young daughter to shoot on something that was relatively similar to my Sig 226. I tested the Mosquito right away with several types of .22 rounds and, true-to-form, it didn't like anything but CCI Mini-Mags, and it ran well with them. I used the CCI rounds for about the first 1,000 rounds, then re-tested with several different rounds. After that, it functioned just fine with just about any round I used (including sub-sonics!), with the notable exception of Winchester XX. I see/hear people's comments about the Mosquito, but very few have owned/fired them; they're simply regurgitating what they have heard. In the years that I've had mine (and after the initial "testing" effort), I can't remember having a single FTF/FTE, other than with Winchester rounds. My daughter considered it "her gun" firing it for years until she finally moved up to firing 9mm (the 226 which, for some reason, my wife considers HER gun!). But FWIW, the last few times we've been to the range, my daughter always reminds me to bring the SR22.

Stupid question, and I may have missed it in these posts. OP, do you have a 9mm pistol? If so, a few of the popular ones have .22lr conversion kits so you can plink and train with your main pistol, cheaper, and without having to go thru a FFL. I bought a Kadet kit for my CZ75 and love it, as do the kids.

Not yet discussed : .22lr pistols can fall into different categories. Pertinent to this discussion:

Clone / close derivative/ highly reminiscent of a particular centerline pistol , to be a direct understudy .

Purpose Built full size .22 lr pistol - current mfg clichés are Ruger Mark series , and Browning Buckmark .

    Cross referenced by accuracy expectations:

" Sorta good enough for up close SD practice , if the target is big enough "

Normal accurate- Minute of soda can/ minute of squirrel, good enough for semi serious skill development

Really Accurate - You would be competitive at Camp Perry or Olympics.

Some of the categories can overlap. i.e. My Colt Licensed , Walther mfg .22 1911 also checks off general purpose , reasonably accurate. 22 semiauto.

I do have a 9 sirex, but have not been able to locate a kit for it. P229 originally in 40 (gasp)! And now in 9 via a bar-sto barrel kit. Maybe I can find a 22 there. Had forgotten about them,.

Old Ruger Single Six 22 / 22 mag
Old High Standard Victor's or Trophy (nice 22's)
    Colt Ace or the conversion
    Colt Diamondback
Have 2 GSG Firefly pistols, less then $200 each, no problems or issues.

Maybe an older Ruger 22 semi

I admire your taste. But for someone starting out in 2024 :

Diamondback = Stupid Collectable and stupid expensive.

ACE = Stupid Collectable and Stupid expensive

Single Six - newly mfg ( Single Ten ) is Stupid high MSRP . Used prices vary significantly, so you'll have to look .

I appreciate my Single Sixes , especially the 3 Screws . But if I was starting out now, I'd be looking at ( steel frame ) Super Wrangler Convertible.

S&W revolvers in 22 are pretty nice.
If you like C&R: The M34 is a classic. Want lighter? M43 is the same J-frame but with an alloy frame. Want stainless steel? M63. Want heavier frame? M17 was THE classic target revolver.

Colt has a number of C&R revolvers:
Officer's models, both regular and target config, Official Police in 22.
Just saw a couple Colt single-action Buntline Scouts, with 9.5" barrels. Kinda tempting, actually. Available in 22 magnum as well.

The H&R top-break models hold 9 rounds, eject all at once like the Webley. Oh, yeah, staying in the C&R groove, you can get a Webley Mk VI with a 22 Parker-Hale conversion, but it only holds 6.

    Semi-auto?
Colt Woodsman is a C&R classic, but a little finicky to mess with. Available in many configurations too.
S&W 41 can be had as a C&R, and also new if you prefer.
Walther has a bunch of C&R 22 pistols; Olympia, PP Sport, PP and PPK and PPK/S in both steel and alloy frames, and I think the German-made TPH is both C&R eligible and has the alloy frame. (The US-made models are all steel, and not C&R.)

If you're into CZ 75s, and want to practice with cheap ammo, they made a Kadet 22 cal pistol on the 75 frame, and also a Kadet conversion kit for the frame you already own.

22s are like potato chips; it's so hard to stop with just one.

    [...yeah your right...but...
given 2024...Current Ruger, Firefly, Browning, or something similar ] had no issues with any.

Diamondback = Stupid Collectable and stupid expensive.

[.... Dont keep up with prices, they are some nice revolver(s) and a 38 spl ]

ACE = Stupid Collectable and Stupid expensive

Single Six - newly mfg ( Single Ten ) is Stupid high MSRP . Used prices vary significantly, so you'll have to look .

[.... seen a few old 3 screws go for decent prices ]

I appreciate my Single Sixes , especially the 3 Screws . But if I was starting out now, I'd be looking at ( steel frame ) Super Wrangler Convertible.

    [.... yeah...understandable ]

Maybe I need to take out the "old age" factor and think like a first time like buyer. With the internet and all the videos, thoughts/ opinions, have to find a way, someone to "try" theirs out, which in most cases, slim, next to none. ..but that's an opinion...

Sorry for "off topic from OP.
