From IDPA's Facebook page (bold portions my doing):

The final version of the 2017 IDPA Rulebook will be posted on the IDPA website (www.idpa.com/misc) .
    ·
IDPA Headquarters is contacting printers. Printing and distribution details will be announced as soon as we know dates. New target design is listed and is optional, but is not required to be used until Jan., 2018.
In response to comments received, we made several changes to the draft rulebook, some of which simplified rules. Some changes to division sizes and clarifications of rules concepts were also made.
This rule book goes into effect January 1, 2017.
Safety Officer Instruction Materials will be available shortly and testing will be updated. Final dates will be announced in the Tactical Brief when available.
Questions about rules should be directed to your Area Coordinator or International Point of Contact. If the AC cannot answer it directly, he will escalate it to the IDPA Headquarters Rules Team for review. At no time should members contact IDPA HQ with rules questions.

members should never contact hq with rules questions, really? maybe we shouldn't contact them with our friggin annual dues either.

i am glad to finally see fault lines and hopefully that removes the biggest idpa criticism, cover call subjectivity.

crap though that they put out interim division gun size specs, left them out there for way too long, knowing folks would buy guns for the new divisions, and then tighten those specs now.

I would love to know the real reason why they shrank the ccp and bug boxes to what they are now.

I have two guns very close that I don't know for sure where they will fall.
My M&P9C was a BUG, but now is probably a CCP but it is so close, I'll need to put it in a box to be sure. With a 3.5 barrel, I'll be at a disadvantage in CCP. Fortunately I shoot it well.
My M&P9 may just make it into CCP now with the longer barrel limit but may be just a hair too high. This be great for CCP with a 4.25 barrel.
Personally I think CCP should be smaller, not larger. But these are the new rules.

yep my current ccp gun will now have to be used in cdp and pretty sure my current bug will now have to be used in ccp, and neither are optimal for those divisions.

while i'd rather finish higher up in the rankings than lower, i've mostly decided in idpa i just want to get practice with my carry/hd guns, so if i don't have the most competitive gun/caliber for a division, so be it.

This version only changed the weight of BUG not the box size. Just measured a 9mm shield and it won't fit even with the short mag.
I don't believe this is the "final" version yet. I like the sport but HQ brings a lot of hate and discontent on themselves when they rush stuff like this.
And why wasn't there any mention of the 4" -0 circle in the head on the draft changes?

    2015 rules BUG-S:
8.2.6.6.1.5 The unloaded firearm with the heaviest magazine must weigh 29.00 oz. (822.1 grams) or less.
    8.2.6.6.1.6 The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 7 ¼” x 5 ½” x 1 ⅜” (184.2 mm x 139.7 mm x 34.9 mm.)

    2017 rules BUG-S:
    E. The unloaded firearm with the heaviest magazine must weigh 26 oz. or less.
    F. The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1 3/8".

3/4" less in length and 1" less in height. Pretty big change for BUG.

SteveG75, I meant that between the draft and the final they didn't FIX the size. HQ said they made the final size bigger than the draft rules to allow the shield to fit BUG but all the boxes are the same as the draft sizes. I agree the change is a lot from the last rulebook.

I got the XDs 4" just for CCP. I didn't shot it that well anyway, but still, it's only a year old.

As unhappy as we are, you know they are getting serious hate mail at HQ.

All is good. They really didn't do a good job proofreading and thinking through the second and third order effects of the changes.

For example, PCC is gone but section 8.1 still reads:
    A. IDPA is divided into 6 regular divisions that are entirely separate. None of the following divisions compete against any other division:
Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP) Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) Revolver (REV) Back Up Gun (BUG)
    A. BUG is a required division for Tier 1 matches and is an optional division for Tier 2 – Tier 5 Sanctioned matches.
    B. PCC is an optional Specialty Division for Tier 1 – Tier 5 matches.

And, the new targets mean that there can be no more head only targets on a stage due to rule 6.6.22.

6.6.22 Cardboard targets at 10 yards or less from the shooter must present a minimum of 18 square inches of a down zero zone, with the smallest dimension being at least 3 inches. Example: half a head target.

A 4" diameter down zero circle (in head of new target) has an area of 12.57 square inches, well less than 18 square inches. Heck, it is reducing the down zero of the head from 36 square inches to almost a third of that. Add in the 1 sec per point down and scores may increase quite a bit.

The M&P Shield 9/40 does not meet the 4.5" height constraint.

Under the 2015 rules, I had three BUG compliant pistols. Now, I have none - not even my M&P Shield 9. Bummer. :sad20:
