Is there a way to disassemble the barrel bushing without using the tool?

I would say depends on the gun.

Mine, yes. Depress spring with fingers securely and turn bushing to the side, then gently let the spring out.

I suspect some tight bushings will require the wrench, but with strong hands many can be done by hand.

Not sure I'm interpreting your question correctly...

I've only seen bushings that are machined from a single piece of steel, and can't be disassembled.

Do you mean "remove the barrel bushing"?

If so, you can just push the plunger down, then rotate the bushing to the side.

Depending on the strength of the recoil spring, and your finger/hand strength, you may need to use something to depress the plunger far enough to allow the bushing to rotate.

    Kind of like this:

There's a tool to remove the M1911's barrel bushing? Really?

I've never even thought that was an issue to do in the first place.
That was my thought, but I only own a basic Springfield 1911. Nothing fancy or custom.

My Kimber with a custom precision fit (EGW) bushing needs the tool. My ATI and Remington Rand do not and are more sloppy loose fit.
