I have been looking to build a reproduction Mosin sniper. For Christmas I got the reproduction sniper scope and mount from Sportsmans guide. I know, not perfection, but close enough for me. Well, I sold another set of rims I had and bought this '44 Izzy ex sniper from Pat Burns. It is a '44 with a very repaired ex sniper stock, which I thought was pretty nostalgic. The plan was to take the action, keep the stock as is, and drop the action into another stock with cutout for the scope mount. The action is kinda smooth. However the bore was listed as good sharp and shiney. Looking at it (got it yesterday afternoon), the bore looks very worn out. The lands toward the end of the muzle are almost worn down. Worse than my '42 infantry Mosin, and much worse than my '32 infantry Mosin, which is pretty sharp. Haven't shot it yet, but just in looking at it, I'm debating on selling it already and try another exsniper and try my luck. I wanted a really good bore, and even asked for more in depth crisper pictures, and they looked good via email. So now I debate, sell and go fishing again, or keep this one?

veery ,veeery ,nice comrade:party29:I would get a new stock like you said and slap a scope on it. I don't think the bore is horrible.

I'd say it doesn't look too bad, at least from my opinion. I would shoot it a few times before you decide to sell it to see if it doesn't shoot good. I've had a few rifles with worn out looking bores that shoot just as good as rifles with perfect ones

Checking out the bore visually >may< be a decent way to judge a potential shooter. But let's be honest, you will never know how well the rifle shoots...until you shoot it. The best advice I could give you for "re-snipering" an ex-sniper is to take it to the range and see if it groups well enough to be worthy of adding the scope.
No sense in spending the money on one that can only group within a pie plate at 100yds on it's best day. YMMV

HA. You aint the first person to get burned by pat 'burns'. She is hit or miss, ask me how I know

Hmm, well that's a bummer. I thought she had a pretty good rep on the web, which is why I felt comfortable buying from her. The initial pics were very soft. I figured this was because the wood is pretty beat, which was the least of my concerns, in fact I liked the beat up stock. Even though I was going to cut a spare. I did ask for emails of clearer pics and pics of the bore, which she sent about a week or so later after 2 email requests. It was like I was asking her to do something abnormal. Her pics were by far worse than any other seller. The new pics were not much better, but the exterior of the metal looked good, the bore pic she sent didn't look any different than my other two. When I got home I did the side by side comparison and the bore is much, much more worn than the other two. Just kinda bummed is all.:sad20:

Hard to tell, sometimes there is fouling on the barrel and once you clean it it may get much better. I have been very happy with the Firefield scope, very clear and functions good. With your sniper, if the weld over the old holes are smooth it will be a challenge but if the welds have been sloppily fixed where you can see the outlines of the holes then you are very lucky and the drilling will be easy. My friend has done three of these so far so i can get it done for about $125 if you like which includes mounting your base on the receiver. As for the bolt you can either pay $50-60 for a premium service or go on ebay and use the $30 service, both are fine. As for the stock, get a regular stock and notch it yourself, that's what I do.

I had planned on the Ebay guy's service. So far good reviews. Again, I am not a perfectionist or purist, just kinda bummed when I got a GOOD look down the bore. I may try another ex sniper if this one doesn't shoot great. I was toying with scoping my '42, but I love her as is.

I have used the ebay guy's bolt service and am happy with it, thought it was real good workmanship. Some claimed it did not look "original" enough but it looks and functions great.
