    FYI:

    I got 4 estimates for a brick retaining wall in my back yard. Small one (12'x3'), easy access and not much digging. I also provided half the brick and was going to help with digging.

    Highest estimate was $7,000 and lowest was ~$2500.

    I decided to do it myself with some railroad ties that should last +/- 10 years and should cost a total of $300 including a gravel base and draining.

    Not as pretty or robust but much more affordable.

    A lot of times these contractors are insane, trying to make money hand over fist until the weather stops them.

    Good luck with the project. I'd recommend using "tie backs", or some sort of support that holds the wall back from within the earth. I helped a buddy do a bulkhead at a waterfront house, we used a "T" configuration at 3 places within the wall to keep it standing up straight.
