Have you considered another county in MD? I think that you'd still be in the same retirement system, but have the opportunity for a "fresh start".
As hard as things seem, it doesn't make much sense to toss aside a retirement with just 12 years left to get it locked in. Then you can make a drastic change, but at least have a retirement income to help ease things.
And as someone with a retirement check every month, I'd be tempted to find some short term teaching opportunities overseas and get paid to work in other countries for a while. Even working for DODEA might be a good retirement gig! http://www.dodea.edu/Offices/HR/employment/teacher.cfm
Was never a teacher, but was in a similar condition of "burn out". The last several years really sucked, but finally getting out and not having to worry as much about the future is a huge benefit!
