I acquired some .308 Speer TNT 125 HP. I loaded 10 test rounds. Using Winchester 296 with 15.7 gr. The COL is 2.060. The bullets were barely in the cartridge. I get to the range today and load the mag and and the two bullets come apart. I crimped them (Factory Lee Crimp Die) but I'll assume there was not much bullet to crimp. There is no cannelure on this bullet.

How much more can I insert this bullet into the brass? Whats a safe COL?

I understand you're using a .308 bullet, but what caliber are you reloading for? COL for a 308 Winchester with a 125 grain bullet is 2.7 inches. I'm going to assume your not reloading for a .308 rifle.

EDIT: Based on your data, I'm also going to assume you're loading a 300 Blackout. Make sure your brass is not trimmed too short. Per the Hodgdon reloading site your data is dead on for that caliber.

Thanks for the response; 300 blackout

I'm checking the length of the newly opened bag and none of the brass is anywhere near the 1.348-1.368.

I saw the above trim lengths and thought that you trimmed the brass once they stretched to that length after a few firing and reloading cycles.

The longest measured brass was 1.170. Do I have a bad batch/short cut bag of 300 blk?

That's not 300 blackout brass then. The brass should be 1.368. I'll assume your number was a typo. If it's all 1.168 you need to ask for your money back...

The bullets are .920 and at 2.060 COAL you should have .228" of bullet in the case. That should have held just fine.

Sounds like the wrong brass. Check all the headstamps?

My numbers are not a typo!

The longest case measured has been 1.170
Ive crossed checked a couple of loading sites and Ive seen COAL of 2.050 - 2.060. I'll be calling the manufacturer in the morning.

Outrider58 (and others) are spot on as usual. Spec case length is 1.368": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.300_AAC_Blackout

COAL may vary depending on the bullet used.

OP, many of us here have reformed .223/.556 cases into 300 BO. If you could post some pics of what you're dealing with we could maybe help better...

Newly opened bag. Of the brass I measured, 1.170 is the longest Ive measured so far. I brought two bags. I was going to open the second bag but decided against that. I measured a couple of the shells through the bag and it the same issue.

Midway’s ad is all well and good. But they could have sent you something different. Pics of the actual cases you’re dealing with (especially with one compared to a known 300 BO case) would be much more helpful...
