I still cannot get an answer as to how to make sure one does not unknowingly take a prohibited person to the range as a friend. Is giving firearms training/letting a prohibited person shoot for fun any type of offense??

Pretty good primer. If the OP takes this test, reads closely and answers truthfully, he/she will have a good idea.
The one that needs to be closely read is "convicted of a crime where the judge could have sentenced...". Being found guilty and given probation for something that an angry judge could have locked you up for a year is a disqualifier.

OP/Liberty- What is the issue you are concerned about?

NICS checks can only be done by a licensed FFL and only in conjunction with the purchase of a firearm.

You could look in MD Case Search to see what a persons criminal history might be but that doesn’t cover other states .

Go to Dick's Sporting Goods when it's not busy and find a long gun that interests you. Attempt to purchase it. They will run a NICS check on you before they charge you (if I remember correctly - stopped shopping there after their CEO went rabid anti 2A). If you pass, they will want payment from you. Decline and go to local gun store that supports the 2A.

Excellently idea. Give Dick’s the dick!
    :)

The DSG employee still gets paid, and if not a busy time, hasn't been distracted from other customers.

OP, answer all questions on the 4473 form/NICS check truthfully of course.

For them it is. Not sure about the guy that handed them the firearm. I believe I read on here a while back about prohibited persons renting a firearm to shoot at the range and they were arrested.

If the buyer truthfully answers the 4473 the FFL may not even conduct the NICS check to keep from having the query logged.

    Just a thought
