The Good news with the AG Race is that we finally have an AG candidate who gives a crap about winning.

I just wanted to make sure everyone knows the facts about the law/regs/policy question. You need to know how the system actually works if you want to change it. Hogan has not been candid about it nor will he ever be.
I assume everyone has seen his recent commitment to reject the NRA.

Is this what you were trying to post? This is pretty damning for the Hogan lovers on the forum.

It was brought up this weekend too. Hogan's letter might have also run in the Capital Gazette.

Sounds like he's in favor of the failed Manchin-Toomey bill, as he says that a "nationwide, universal background check system" is "common sense." I'm reading this to mean that he'll support legislation in MD for background checks of all firearm transfers in the state, thus eliminating face-to-face transfers of what are often hunting rifles and adding time as well as a fee to the process.

If I remember correctly, one of the reasons that Manchin-Toomey failed is that it also would be linked to a nationwide gun registration. Given how Maryland keeps a permanent record of handgun transfers (and previously registered "assault" rifles), Maryland would no doubt expand the current registry.

If Hogan is supporting this now, I think it's the minimum that we can expect in the next legislative session if Hogan or Jealous wins.

Hogan would probably get behind laws that regulate 80% receivers, and it's unclear where he stands on >10 rd mag bans (wouldn't be surprised if he supported a ban though). Jealous wants to go even further and ban shotguns, which is kind of ridiculous, and I doubt would get legislative support.

The policy differences between Hogan and Jealous are obviously larger and more clear on non-2A fronts. The danger of Hogan is how far left he will pull other Maryland Republicans to the left on 2A issues - and whether this will be permanent. Jealous wouldn't do this (in fact he might better solidify Republican support for 2A rights), but he is more of a threat on a multitude of other issues.

I like how he mentions repeat offenders, career criminals and that the majority of the killings were done by illegal guns.

But, I didn't see where in SB-101, I am guessing that's what he is referring to when he talks about legislation passed to give heavier penalties to repeat offenders, has any real impact?

Maybe I didn't find the full text of the bill when I went looking. It seems to be wrapped up with some other subjects as well, expungement of criminal records being one of them.

I think Hogan will go pretty far left on 2A issues. I don't think he feels as though we are that big of a worry for him.

He stands to lose more voters if he was to promise to cut back on social programs than if he was to further restrict 2A rights.

I wonder if Hogan owns a gun. Not that one needs one to be a 2A defender, but those that have owned one often will be.

I also don't see Hogan as some bulwark to prevent the further erosion of 2A rights in Maryland. He's already signaling he will sign for more gun control. He also knows what is possible, as he wants to show he is successful (vs over promise and under deliver).

And yes, he's clearly calculated that he doesn't need votes from 2A single-issue voters, and thinks that with an extreme left opponent, he can run center-left to get some of the 2A-supporting fiscal conservatives to break his way as well as moderate Democrats.

He has done a great job of playing the center of the fence, never really committing to anything to where either side can find extreme fault with him. Even my liberal Democrat friends love him and are going to vote for him again.

My thinking is that Jealous will press him to take a stance on something and try to use it against him. He will either drag him far left and hope he loses support among the more conservative Republicans who were willing to accept a left leaning Republican or he will push him to the right and hope he loses more of the centrist Democrat vote.
