Was thinking of going with this combination but wanted opinions first. Seemed to be the most cost effective way to do it and once done I'd be set for a long long time.

    Desiccant........

Personally, I would NOT put any of the tub type in my safe.

They are SALT. Salt and metal is NOT a good combination.

I have the Remington version of these and it take every bit of 12-14 hours to recharge them. Then you have to understand, if you're in and out of your safe like I am mine, it won't last that long anyway.

My safes all have a goldenrod, the Remington Rechargeable unit and 2 Hydrosorbent Co 360 grams silica gel boxes. This may be overkill, but it is what it is.

What humidity level do you believe is safe for non wood firearms?

I cannot get my basement below 45-50% during some months like now. I have a dehumidifier running all the time and have EVA-500 in my small 2 rifle safe. Its more like a closet so really the EVA-500 is drawing from outside of it too. Once the cooler months hit, the basement is around 30%.

Should I move the safe to an above grade area?

Acknowledging that you reference non-wood firearms, here are some recommendations from the NRA. In summary, 70 deg F and 50% humidity. Granted, they are trying to strike a balance but I would think it's still relevant to non-wood firearms.

Thank you for the article. I think I'm good. If I had wood stocks I'd probably change my plan but the article does state large swings can hurt metal too. I'm sure the definition of large differs for wood to metal.

Edit: I actually found a vent that was closed in the area where the safe is. I opened it and after a few hours the humidity level dropped 10%. Unfortunately, the temp upstairs also increased markedly.

So what is more important. My wife's comfort or my gun's comfort?
