if you would like... maybe mail me two pieces and I will try them in my set up. if you want to give this a try, pm me and I will give you my address. I would think you could just drop them into a regular envelope with something padding them. just a thought

Thanks, HERMYJOE. I may take you up on that offer. But first, I have a batch of 1x fired Lapua brass I'm going to check. And I know exactly which rifle I fired those out of.

The mystery continues. I tried running a 1x fired piece of Lapua brass, no go. Fresh, unfired Lapua from the same batch runs fine.

In the attached pic is the Lapua brass I tried to resize. You can see a faint mark half way down the neck, where, I'm guessing, the brass stops moving into the die.

If I can get to the range this week, I'll fire off a few rounds out of my other AR10 and see if I have the same problem.

I've reloaded thousands of rounds with this die and shot thousands of rounds through these rifles. Something changed or I'm just missing or skipping something very simple.

Seems the problem is neck related...measure a piece of brass that you have sized in the die (outside diameter). what is the neck on the new unfired lapua brass? What is the neck on the "sized" brass?

On the once fired pieces of brass measure those also (.3452" if I remember right?).

What die are you using? Full length sizing die? Bushing die?

Take the die apart and inspect it...something lodged? dirty/gummy? expander ball misaligned? I'm grabbing for straws here but seems the neck expanded to far?

I've necked down 6.5x47 to 6x47 lapua brass and the press handle pull isn't hard enough for me to think wow, something is off here. And that is going down .021" (.264-.243).

I measured a few pieces of the 1x fired Lapua; they are running between 0.345 and 0.350. They're not very round at this stage of the process.

The 2x fired FGMM brass was averaging 0.3452 at the neck.

I don't have any unloaded, resized brass laying around, unfortunately. But I do have a bunch of 1x fired, now reloaded IMI 7.62. The necks on them are reading a very consistent 0.338.

RCBS Rock Chucker press, Redding FL die.

I've taken the expander ball out completely and that didn't fix the problem.

I haven't been able to eyeball anything in the die, but I need to look closer.

Got any lanolin-based spray on lube? I know you said you used Imperial Wax, which is good stuff, and RCBS but I went to lanolin-based Dillions or Frankland Armory a long time ago.

With a Rockchucker press, you can smash any brass up to .338 Lapua. It can't be the brass stopping you as the compound leverage will overcome the brass. Look at the press linkage and see if something fell in and is keeping it from full travel.

To show how strong these presses are I just took the ball off mine and put a four foot piece of gas pipe on it so I could size down some .314 Lyman #2 alloy bullets to .309. I had to tie my work bench down and use both hands on the pipe. The Rockchucker just keeps on going like the Eveready Bunny.

Just for the guys who say sizing .005 is too much, it works fine for shooting powder coated bullets through a 1919 Browning at 100 yards. Bullseye accuracy isn't needed.

K31 - I've tried RCBS Case Slick, too. But don't know if that is lanolin based.

John From MD - Ha! On my first attempts I leaned on the handle so hard the table was coming up off the floor. I had to stand on the table to be able to get leverage to pull the handle back up.

But I didn't try a 4' cheater. I think I will. You know what they say, "Don't force it, get a bigger hammer."

Or at least someone can come by and take a look. A set of fresh eyes.

Also, if I remember, I will measure some once fired brass from my bolt rifle to see what the neck size is running.

I sheepishly return with an update.

I'm no Arnold Schwarzenegger, but not a total noodle arm either. But before putting a 4' cheater on the press I decided to really lay into it. Way, way more than I have ever had to in the past. Seems to work fine.

Sorry for the hassle and I very much appreciate all the ideas you guys presented and the personal help offered.

Uncle Duke asked earlier if I had been shooting in this hot weather. Yes. Probably most, if not all of the rounds I'm working with right now were shot when the temperature was in the 90's. Does a 20-30 degree increase in the ambient temperature make that much of a difference?

    Thanks again!
