Please don't hotlink images from this site if at all possible. Specifically, I am referring to the person that is also a member of GetOffTheX.com and is hotlinking their avatar from this site. I don't know who you are, and I don't care, but it is just bad manners. Please download the avatar and upload it to the other forum, or get an account at PhotoBucket and host it there. It uses my precious bandwidth, and skews my web stats.

    Thank you!

**EDIT** I should note that I can turn on hotlink protection so that it doesn't happen at all, but I understand that there are certain cases where it might be necessary. I would rather not do that. Hotlinking an avatar is NOT one of those cases.

Woooowww, I had no idea. I can't remember if I did this here or not before and I don't think I did, but I know I did it to other websights. :o

I've never been overly concerned about it, as I know that most people don't know what it is. But someone linked an avatar that pulls from this site every time a thread is viewed on another forum, and it is killing me. Novus, if you did it in the past, I didn't notice, so obviously it wasn't sucking much bandwidth. I don't mind if that is the case.

Maybe the reason you never noticed is because you guys keep deleting those porn spammer threads right after I hotlink the image to xpeeps, darnit! :mad54:

Sorry, I may be slow but can someone give me the cliff notes version? I did read the link but still confused.:innocent0

Ok, this is what I think it is. This is from Wikipedia http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/Pistol_TT33.jpg

This is the same thing that I think is hotlinked.

Example: You join another forum. For your avatar, you enter http://www.mdshooters.com/myavatar.jpg. That will display your MDShooters avatar, but it does so by pulling the image from this site rather than your new forum, or a host that approves of hotlinking such as photobucket. If you are a member of another forum and you want to know if you are hotlinking, go to that forum, right click on your avatar and choose 'properties', and if you see "mdshooters.com" anywhere on the properties page then you are probably hotlinking.

I rehost pretty much anything I post on Imageshack.us

Can you use .htaccess to block hotlinking?

I post on SA and they've been known to replace hotlinked images with some pretty... undesirable images, you'd be surprised how quick people learn to not hotlink after they have accidentally shown all of their friends something downright disgusting.

So you are saying we shouldn't just copy and paste the image into
    our messages?:sign07:

No I believe thats fine, but the other way around is bad, Being that we are a small forum here, it uses up a lot of bandwidth if you have a photo on the forum here then you hot link it to another site, see novus collectus post, you should get it then. http://www.mdshooters.com/showpost.php?p=46776&postcount=9

    Hope that helps ya.

??? On another site or here? If you want to display an image that you found on the net, you should save the image to your hard drive, and then either upload it to the forum or to a free image service such as PhotoBucket. Just don't create a link on site abc.com that points to an image on site xyz.com. Download the image from xyz.com and then upload it to abc.com (if they allow uploads. if not, use imageshack or photobucket).

    Bump.

Side note, using a service like photobucket is really preferred as apparently that uses none of our resources.
