Went to the MoCo County Fair Saturday, saw the MSP had a booth. I took the opportunity to speak with the two officers there, on the topic most dear to our hearts, concealed carry.

They were in total ignorance of the whole megillah; no odea what th Licensing Division was up to, no idea of what G&S meant. One of them, a young lady, was innocent enough to indicate she thought self-defense was considered legitimate.

I posed the question of what they personally thought of civilian carry; at first they claimed to have no thoughts on the matter. Eventually a certain level of conditioning appeared; they were concerned, as we all are, about unstable individuals with firearms. I told them that the screening process did as much as could be done in that area, and pointed out that the 40 or so states that have gone shall-issue or constitutional carry, were not experiencing bloodbaths, and that statistics showed conclusively that citizens with permits were far and away the most law-abiding group in the nation, even including the police.

I didn't hang around much, as my wife wanted to experience the joys of Fairdom, but it was somewhat enlightening to see that they were first of all clueless, and secondly willing to hear what I had to say. Maybe they'll think about it some.

Most cops, from any department, have no knowledge about guns, and could care less...very few beat cops are "gun haters".....that's for the executive level bunch with political aspirations, etc.......

Honestly, I would not expect them to know anything. The MSP does a piss poor job of training and educating their troopers on current MD allowances regarding citizens self-defense. Also, if the troopers were given the opportunity to staff a public facing fair booth, they are not the type of rejects relegated to the licensing division. From what I have gathered, the LD is a dumping ground for those who are lacking in some area of policing.

    They are Troopers, not Officers.
Why would you expect cops in general to know the plight of citizens wanting to carry? They've been carrying since they got on the job. It's just a thing. I know for me it was no heraldry to it Unless they were a member here before getting on the job, most would no zilch. Cops don't become cops to become 2A experts to help the citizen fight.
I don't fault then one bit, especially if they are new on the job.
You sure schooled them well. Shame you didn't have more time to belittle them in the ways of Maryland 2A.

Thanks for correcting me on the Trooper issue.

I had no expectations in chatting with them, I merely wanted to sound out the depth of their awareness, if any regarding the topic.

    I did not "fault" them.

I neither schooled them nor belittled them.

If you're unable to comprehend the concept of exploring others' ideas and awareness, then you'll probably take offense at this post, too.

On a more positive note, I believe I've learned something from our little exchange here.

Why would you query a state employee who is not supposed to be political, about a heated political issue?
Most here when they post "interactions with a cop" rhetoric, it's to get a pat on the back by the enthusiasts because they "schooled the man".
    My apologies if I misunderstood.

No sweat. I just like to get various perspectives in things.
