European law enforcement and militaries were far more fixated on smaller caliber pistols than Americans were. We seemed to be fixed on the concept of "size matters" long before videos. Sidearms in many European armies were more a badge of rank or office than a combat tool.

Pocket pistols in .32 and .380 were common issue in both wars. Mauser 1910/1914. HSc, FN 1900/1910/1922, Walther PP/PPK, Beretta 1934/1935, etc. The US military issued the Colt 1908 (.380 version of the 1903) to officers in WWII. So it's not a surprise that the Belgians went to Colt for a pistol very similar to the FN 1910 and much better than the FN 1900 that was the official issue for Belgian services.

No suprise the belgians got their ass kicked twice

I guess it makes sense as more of a rank insignia.
