The price wasn't bad...several hundred dollars less than asking prices on Gunbrokers and Guns International...which shows that asking prices are inflated. It also came with several genuine Detonics magazines, extra barrels, recoil guide assemblies and a few other extra parts the are no longer available. I could sell the extra stuff and pretty much have very little invested in the pistol itself...but I'll hang on to all.

Well, that's good because I nearly gagged when I saw what they were asking for them on GB a couple of years ago. They weren't exactly 'cheap' when they were brand new, either.

    Great score!

Sig Sauer 1911 Nightmare Carry edition.

Just got it back from Sig after having them install an ambidextrous safety for us south paws!

It's a great shooter and after 800+ rounds only 3 malfunctions. 1 FTF and 2 stove pipes.

I learned how to install ambi safeties this year. The 10-8 armorers block is great. I think I installed 5 on my guns that needed them.

    A "Randy" Pair

Just got these out of MSP purgatory...
a nice pair of Randall 1911's.

Not something well known, Randall was only in business from 1983 to 1984 and these were produced in limited numbers.
S/N's run from 2000 to ~9200 so roughly 7200 of all models were made.

The top one is a .45 ACP Model A131 (target sights) and the bottom is a rare 9mm Model A112 (fixed sights).
The 9mm has a factory full-length guide rod; only 301 A112's were made, and the majority went to Europe apparently.

Their big marketing campaign hinged on being the "first all-stainless steel 1911 ready for duty".
AMT had tried but had issues with the frame and slide galling, which Randall solved by using different alloys.
Every part of the Randall is stainless except grips (the grip screws are stainless though).

The other claim to fame was having the first production true left-handed 1911, which was a pure mirror image -
left-hand magazine, and even the rifling was reversed.

Yup. There was a model B131 left-handed on GB a few weeks ago, with box for $2k BIN.
Needless to say it didn't last long!

Actually just working the numbers is surprising:
421 9mm (of which 10 were lefties) of all models
    743 Left-hand (including the 10 9mm) of all models
I may have miscounted by one or two but still, almost twice as many lefties as 9mm's.
I would not have expected that, but then again 9mm 1911's weren't a "thing" back in the 80's.

and as the Randall historian pointed out, a lot of the 9's went to Europe so you don't often see them here.
They changed to a "fat barrel" late in the production run, mine is the more common skinny one.

A lot of the early stainless 1911 pistols on the market had issues with galling. It may have put more than one company out of business...they thought they had a good idea but didn't have the engineering to test it and perfect it before putting them on the market.

Back in the day if you wanted a 1911 your choices were a Colt or GI surplus of which there were several makes. There were a few outlier makes available but quality was spotty at best and many were full of surplus parts. A few, like Randall, Crown City Arms and maybe a couple of others tried the stainless route to separate themselves from the pack but all had issues with stainless technology and manufacturing. I don't think the stainless steel problems were perfected until the 1980s...Colt was actually a latecomer to stainless steel guns...I've heard several reasons why but don't know the truth behind it. Colt licked the problem of galling by heat treating the slides and receivers differently...S&W accomplished the same by another route...using two different grade stainless steels for the slides and receivers.

Now...everyone and their brothers are making and selling 1911s...like single-action revolvers and the AR-15 platform.

Once in a while you see them roll back in from the European importers like Simpsons. Should have picked up the last one I saw a couple years ago.

I just managed a lesser goal...a two-tone Colt Delta Elite 10mm...stainless frame and a polished blue slide. I've had a NOS blued Delta slide and a new Colt 10mm barrel for some time but couldn't find an appropriate frame to mount it on. It made no sense to me to get a Delta all-stainless and replace the perfectly good Colt slide. Recently I picked up a Delta that had the slide replaced with an aftermarket one...the price was reasonable and I can sell the aftermarket slide. I put them together today and like the results. Since it was a bit of a Frankengun already making some custom touches was ok.

The pistol as I received it...

Here it is after the changes...

Here are all my 10mm handguns...top left is an older blue Delta Elite...top right is a Delta with a black IonBond slide...bottom left is an all stainless Delta...bottom right is my new polished blue/stainless Delta and the bottom is my Ruger Blackhawk convertible in 10mm/.40 caliber. All are awesome handguns.
