    I mean, I'm pretty sure it's a nutria.

I'm from the West Bank of New Orleans. I know what hell the state goes through trying to control damage to levees and marshland down there.

I looked it up on MD DNR and they make it sound like they pretty well have them isolated and under wraps.

    I sent them an email.

It's hard to tell, without something of known size to put in context...but I think it's a fat muskrat.
The tail looks flat (vertically) like a muskrat and nutria have very light whiskers.

An adult muskrat is about 40–70 cm (16–28 in) long, almost half of that is the tail, and weighs from 0.6–2 kg (1.3–4.4 lb).

The coypu somewhat resembles a very large rat, or a beaver with a small tail. Adults are typically 5–9 kg (11–20 lb) in weight, and 40–60 cm (16–24 in) in body length, with a 30–45 cm (12–18 in) tail.

Hard to tell. It definitely looked as big as the wife's 5lb dog. Size and the fact that it seemed pretty unbotherd by me getting close to it with a kid yelling "kurl" at it, made me think juvenile. But it's not like anyone in Crofton is shooting at anything.
