For the first time in 20 years of NYT polling, a majority of Americans oppose an assault weapon ban.

It seems that President Obama’s call for an assault weapons ban in his recent Oval Office address and the New York Times’s front page editorial advocating that Americans be made to give up their guns had a significant impact on influencing public opinion — just not in the way that they had hoped.

Public opinion does not matter to our dear leader. He knows what is best for us and his pen still has ink in it..

The large 7-point jump of Americans favoring the AWB in August 1996 followed the mass shooting in Port Arthur, Australia in the Spring of 1996

And not surprisingly, the peak of Americans favoring an AWB was in August 1999, just four months after Columbine.

Seems clear the drop in AWB favorability this month is Americans coming to their senses about what is happening in the real world and not in their Utopian dreams.

I was hoping more people were not being duped by the language. A semi auto rifle, is a semi auto rifle.. Why not dress an AR-15 in some pretty wood furniture, and see how many know it is the same rifle that bubba has with all the junk hanging off every rail.

Like this? Looks like a proper hunting rifle to me.

However, the poll also says that a slight majority want tougher laws -- which seems to be "normal" if you look over the prior numbers.

Notice what part people think will better handle gun laws though.

The whole "tougher laws" is a BS question because most people don't know what laws are already on the books. A few years ago I was talking to a guy who was all in favor of the AWB and strict gun control because he thought things were easy to buy. I showed him my 77r and read the questions and he realized he was disqualified and couldn't buy a gun. I was laughing my ass off at him.

FEMA tells you "You are on your own for the first 72hrs". People are listening. The war, people seeing EBRs everywhere on TV, the zombie craze, and an overall sense that the govt will not help them, are all contributing to this.

People lie to pollsters, but the video of lines around the block at gun stores is as truthy as it gets.

    Ain't it a beautiful thing.

Let them keep pushing gun control.

Now, if the Republicans are smart, they will make an RNC commercial outlining this fact going to election season.

State that the majority of Americans, Right, Left, and Center believe in owning semi-automatic firearms.

If the RNC is smart they will say and do nothing. Everything they've touched so far has turned to crap. Just let the Dems keep on keeping on...

Polls exist to create a news story or to push the press's agenda. I don't participate in telephone polls, they always call at dinner time.

The original article says the Afro-American margin of error is 10%. That's a pretty big error for a process that is trying to convince you they are producing meaningful results.

Maybe the result is not what the NYT thought or maybe it's the result they wanted to galvanize liberal into action against the NRA

Polls exist to be compared to other polls..especially across time.

All the defcts of polls are not new, therefore the effects of same are constant.
