Just an FYI, Aldi has a mini cast iron skillet for under 4 bucks beginning this Wednesday. I'm sure it's nowhere near the quality of American made skillets or as good as an old antique seasoned one you can find at yard sales but what the heck anything cast iron beats any of the lastest newfangled pans being peddled these days:

+1 on the chain mail. It sounds gimmicky but works great. Balled up tin foil works too.

And use Crisco or a vegetable oil for seasoning, animal fats don't polymerize as well (the process that creates that non-stick coating).

JHsmith has it right. Forget about buying new pans on sale.

The best price you’re ever going to get is FREE when people throw them away (see below). A yard sale price is the next best. The bonus you get when you find them for free or for a couple dollars at a yard sale free is you’re likely getting classic old-school cast iron.

Goodwill has them, but Goodwill got smart and now prices them $20 and up.

The yard sale finds can be really rusty because the Teflon Generation often took their cast iron skillets out onto their patios to use as flower pot bases. (shame pilgrim!)

Such is the one I found being thrown away just after Christmas while out on an early morning power walk. Pretty much looked like this freeze frame from the Kent Rollins video.

I used balled up tin foil and the scuffy pads to get most of the rust off, then vinegar on the stove to get it to this.

Then more heating cycles with scuffy pads and oil to get it to where the paper towels I’m wiping it out with go from red to light brown to transparent.

Then a couple cycles of good bacon and we are back in business for steak and eggs yesterday morning.

No telling how old it is, but many of these orphan pans have no visible maker’s mark on them—just the old school number system (“”No. 5”) or the pan’s width.

And you can tell this one is old by how crude the casting is. Look at the pan bottom , upper left, for the ridge sticking up. Doesn’t affect it though—the inside cooking surface is perfectly flat.

Of my collection, most are reclaimed/rejuvenated throwaways or yard sale pickups. One or two were found at Goodwill.

Why subject yourself to “non-stick” chemicals when you can live the Cast Iron Life, with some “iron vitamins” as your bonus?

Nothing in the world like a cast iron skillet, the other newfangled stuff is gimmicky junk. Nice collection!

Goodwill has lots of Corning Cookware orphan pot lids (from ceramic cookware that had broken) for $2-4 each.

They make excellent see-thru pot lids to go with my skillets.

Roger Staubach used one. Tom Landry and Jerry Jones have been reported to as well.

Probably not when traveling alone, although it's not like they had a lot of alternatives back then.

But, on cattle drives, definitely (and yes they do still exist). The gentleman (Kent Rollins) whose videos I linked above, owns a 1800's Studebaker Chuck Wagon and still goes out on cattle drives and cooks for the cow hands. He and his wife own and run Red River Ranch catering, that specializes in cast iron cooking.

Screwed around with sanding discs for a bit, then picked up a flap disc for the angle grinder. That was the ticket.

    Time to season it.

I ordered the seat and got 3 handles, should be here tomorrow. Thanks!

This was awesome, thanks everyone! We've been on the look out for more 'old school' cast iron pans for a while now. What great memories!
