What are the consequences/results of an over-tightened barrel nut on an AR-15? Are there "typical" symptoms of this condition?
Assume the receiver face has been properly lapped and is perpendicular.
    Thanks.

Over stress on the reciever, possibly breaking the index pin. Torque values, too much or too little, can effect. accuracy. I torque to 40 foot pounds. Use of proper grease, MS 33, will allow proper torque and conditioning of the metal to aluminum, and also help if/when removing the barrel nut.
