i'm new to the red dot world and wanted to give it a shot (ba dum psh). can anyone out there recommend a cheep red dot (1-4 moa) that doesn't "break" or loose zero after a few rounds of the light recoiling 300blk on an AR platform.

some people have told me you need 400-500 for a red dot.. no thanks. Others say an AIRSOFT red dot is fine??

I put a cheap sightmark (knock off eotech) on my 300blk. It’s been what you could expect from a $100 red dot, it has held zero for about 500 rounds but eats batteries for breakfast. I am planning on changing out soon to a primary arms scope for that round. Believe it or not I put a red dot on a 9mm build from amazon ($30) that I like more then the sightmark. I always blow my budget on builds and upgrade optics later.

I have Bushnell TRS25's on several of my rifles including AR223, AR300,Rossi 92 44mag, KelTec Sub2000 9x19. The have never failed on any platform and are very inexpensive. Many times you can find them on sale for $75 or less.

Vortex has a couple lower priced ones that would work. Not cheap, exactly, but not over the top either.

i hear ya on the optics. i typically start w/ iron sites while i figure out the comfort and intended ranges for said firearm. That dictates the zoom of scope for me. For example: i'm not about to put a 3.5-14x50 mm scope on a 458 socom.. it's just not realistic. i prefer iron sites on that monster rather than a scope but figured i might try a red dot.

I just bought a Sig Romeo from Brownells. In my opinion, if you are just shooting paper during the daytime, you are better off with the Bushnell TRS25. The TRS25 gives you 11 brightness settings and you can turn it down enough to keep the LED looking like a round dot. The Sig has NVG positions, which most folks don't use. and, it gets really bright with in a couple of steps. I can't imagine using the last couple of settings unless you are fighting in the sand box. The bright settings star pretty badly as well which makes them good for IDPA or Three Gun but little else.

I have owned most of the expensive Aimpoint and EOTech sights at one time or another but my guns with red dots are TRS 25's today.

PS, last year I shot a hog just inside 85 yards with my Rossi 92, .44 Mag. You guessed it, it was a TRS25. :party29:

I have a couple of SightMark Ultras on 5.56 ARs and they are a great value for the money. They do not eat batteries like the earlier models and are supposed to withstand recoil from a 50 caliber. Mine hold zero well after more than 1000 rounds. I recommend checking it for tightness after some use to insure it can be removed and reinstalled and still be on zero.

You can sometimes find them on sale for around $45 - 50.

I like sight marks for throw around builds. Good but not so good you get pissed if you break it. Lifetime warranty what is not to like. They do eat batteries and because they eat them hard and fast I tend use dielectric grease on the contacts just in case the battery decides to go full on corrode

I have the Primary Arms 1-6x24 w/ ACSS reticle for the 16" and an AIMPOINT PRO for the 300 blackout pistol. I have been recommending the Holosun HS503G for 300blk since it's been available. Excellent red dot for the price.

The Sig Romeo 5's are cheap.

The Romeo 5 is my go to red dot now. The auto on/off feature and the mounts that come with it make it a good value. I was going through my illuminated stuff the other day and almost all of them had been left on. CR2032s aren't super cheap. The sig can last for up to 4 years on 1 battery. I got one on ebay for $125 shipped
