I think we can steer our kids back in the right direction. My kids know that I have a knife on me 95% of the time. I got a look the other day when my 5 year old daughter asked "hey day I need your knife over here", and I had to get the scissors. She even asked why didn't I have a knife on me, and that is a proud sort of moment. I said "your right" and let her pick out that days knife. She just caught me at a time I had completely empty pockets for whatever reason around the house.

I carry a pocket knife every day (unless I'm going to work in a secure facility that won't allow it)... 80% of the time I carry a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker, which for me is just about the perfect EDC knife. I like it because it has both the scissors and pliers features.... I find no end of use for the pliers. It also has a hook feature which is perfect for pulling heavy copper staples out of cardboard boxes (a must for those of us with an on-line ammo addiction). It also has a small ball point pen... and while I usually carry a pen, it is supper handy for when one isn't around.

    To the OP:

I think the shift has more to do with public school. If my kids went to school with an edged implement, they would be suspended. You fall out of the habit, find other ways to satisfy or avoid cutting tasks, and your behavior has been modified.

I have to leave my "pen knife" at home on days when I will be walking my kid into school for summer camp.

Last year, when I was at the Baltimore Zoo, it seemed every dad watching the penguin feeding and pushing a stroller had a knife clipped on.

This is spot on. I remember carrying a small pocket knife even when I was a kid. My dad told me... just keep it in your pocket and there won't be any problems, and he was right... but those were different times.

Shit, at that Zoo they wish the knife was a 45!

I have always carried a knife since I was 10 & in Boy Scouts...

    I'm 73 now...

These days I have a "rapid deployment liner lock" knife clipped to my right front pocket...

The blade is 3 3/4" long, half serrated & I keep it SHARP...

Yes, got these essentials today. I've carried a knife since I was at least ten years old, and I've had this Benchmade 42 since high school. I've lately started carrying it again since my Kershaw pocket clip wore a hole in my dress pants.

I been known when going to the courthouse and forgetting to leave my knife at home - of going outside and putting the knife under a bush or other hidden spot and getting it on the way out

I've done that several times now. Just gotta be discreet.

Yep, always. I've even been watching TV late at night in my pajamas and had my kid ask for my knife. He was surprised I didn't have it on me.

There are a lot of places you cant carry a knife. I have found myself walking back to my car many times.

I've carried pocket kinfe of some kind since I was ten years old. It amazes me today how some snowflakes find that frightening.

I took a training class and one guy at my table asked me why I was carrying it ("You should be asking yourself why you aren't carrying one"). The other guy asking me during the break if it was a Benchmade. (Spyderco at the time).

At work recently, I was watching some contractors replace a PC board. "Oh, I need to go get something to cut the tie on this cable". Out comes my knife. "Oh, I need to get a flashlight". Out comes my flashlight.

I figure I prevented 15 minutes downtime from turning into 45 minutes.

Folding knife always in back pocket. 2 boot knives in motorcycle, 2 small Leatherman models as needed. Never without a knife.

Never without a knife here too. I feel naked without a knife in my pocket. Unless flying or going into a gov building, I always have a knife in my pocket and it gets used at least once a day. I also keep a leatherman in my work bag and a fixed blade in the console of every car I own.

I also kept one of these tiny little Buck bottle opener/blades inside my carry-on when flying until about a year ago when some slick at TSA noticed it and took it... I probably flew 50 times with it without even remembering it was in there..

Nice, carried my T-latch 42 for years, no clip, so usually in a watch pocket, or sheath. Picked up a 51 a year or two ago and LOVE IT, a good Bali designed to be carried, lighter, grippier, spring latch, and has a Ti clip. Lots of knives out there with a decent blade length that are quick to open with 1 hand, but not much besides Balis that lock securely CLOSED. I pair mine with a Skeletool or small serrated spyderco to take abuse cutting tough stuff

I cant remember not carrying a knife but nowadays the government makes it a pain if you do. I was escorted out of my boys school several time because they could see a knife on my side. and that was years ago. I have been escorted out of the marine corp museum for having a knife on my side and three in my pockets and I disarmed myself to go to the national archives and forgot my buck toothpick in my key pocket and I thought they were truly gonna shoot my ass over a two inch knife with a 1 1/4 inch blade.

I still carry several at all times and just try and not go anyplace government related.

    Almost always carrying.

I spent years and many dollars trying to find my ideal knife - had to be usable with one hand. Started with the old brass Buck folder, quite a trick to grip the blade and snap it open. The the AGRussell one-hand, which was very compact and a neat idea. Then the Paul, but you had to fiddle your grip to get it to open easily one-handed. Benchmade Nitrous Stryker, but I don't like liner locks, they make me bleed.

Finally, Benchmade Axis Lock knives appeared. McHenry & Williams was the first one I got, but it scared people at work, so I went for the 942, which is just right, weight toward the tip, swings sweetly. Then Cathy Lanier told us plebes to attack if we had to, so I got a Benchmade Contego, for social work. Hope I never need it, but I'm pleased to have it at hand.

I picked up a nice Bradley Kimura butterfly from a poster here, but it's not as simple for me to use as the Benchmades, so it's more for entertainment.

My wife carries a Swiss Army knife. My granddaughters have pearl Texas Toothpicks. Grandson has a little NRA folder; I pass out spare knives to family and boyfriends of the young ladies. For Christmas I gave everyone Benchmade strap cutters to keep in their cars, got a good deal on ebay.
