If there's one positive side to the speech, I think it would be that he was a whole lot softer than the anti's wanted him to be. (In my mind I can see them all across the country throwing hissy fits and that does make me smile a little.)

    Eric Holder and the DOJ should be looking real hard at these;

    4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

    9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations

    10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

    What a bunch of hypocrites.

Still trying to figure out what this means to me, an average guy who was just getting into gun ownership for HD/sport reasons. I have a complete lower sitting around in a box, that was waiting for an upper and parts when all this kicked off. Oh and 1 twenty round Pmag.........does this mean that I will never finish my baby?

    My personal thoughts...

“Because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every act of evil, if there’s even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try.”
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

“We will help schools hire more resource officers if they want them, and develop emergency preparedness plans.”
‘Resource Officers’ if you don’t know are cops. We had them in schools in the 90s when I was in grade school. So BO says more cops and no one flinches.

“These are a few of the 23 executive actions that I’m announcing today, but as important as these steps are, they are in no way a substitute for action from members of Congress. To make a real and lasting difference, Congress, too, must act, and Congress must act soon. And I’m calling on Congress to pass some very specific proposals right away.”

    Great…

“If you want to buy a gun, whether it’s from a licensed dealer, or a private seller, you should at least have to show you are not a felon or somebody legally prohibited from buying one.”

    This is already the case.

“The type of assault rifle used in Aurora, for example, when paired with high capacity magazines has one purpose: to pump out as many bullets as possible as quickly as possible, to do as much damage using bullets often designed to inflict maximum damage.”

He doesn’t say ‘kill as many people as possible’ because as I’ve said before, he’s smarter than a lot of people want to give him credit for being.

“And at a time when budget cuts are forcing many communities to reduce their police force, we should put more cops back on the job and back on our streets.”

Hey! More good guys with guns!

“Like most Americans, I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. I respect our strong tradition of gun ownership and the rights of hunters and sportsmen. There are millions of responsible, law-abiding gun owners in America who cherish their right to bear arms for hunting or sport or protection or collection.”

Again, he’s VERY smart to say a few things here. ‘guarantees and individual the right to bear arms’. Remind me to send that to Ben Cardin who wrote me and said that is simply not true. He’s one of our MD congressmen. ‘of protection’. Again, smart.

“They have the support of the majority of the American people.”

    We’re not a DEMOCRACY.

“As Americans we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights that no man or government can take away from us. But we’ve also long recognized, as our founders recognized, that with rights come responsibilities.”

“We live in a society, a government for and by the people. We are responsible for each other. We have the right to worship freely and safely; that right was denied to Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The right to assemble peacefully; that right was denied shoppers in Placimus (ph), Oregon, and moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado.”

That is why the INFRINGERS of these rights need to be punished! NOT the creation of new laws that inhibit everyone else’s rights!!

If anyone caught the post speech, wolf interviewed Texas rep steve toth, made me want to move to Texas. He made the most sense of anyone I've seen regarding the issues at hand.
I'd also LOVE to know where they some of these stats on CNN. Seems ridiculous... guns are the 3rd leading cause for deaths of kids 5-14?.. I find that really hard to believe.
I hate to admit it, but I am legitimately scared for the future of our country.

He can't create new laws only better enforce those in place lol.

    The 23 things he's signing.

    1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

    2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

    3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

    4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

    5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

    6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

    7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

    8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

    9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

    10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

    11. Nominate an ATF director.

    12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

    13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

    14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

    15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

    16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

    17. Release a letter to health-care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law-enforcement authorities.

    18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

    19. Develop model emergency-response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

    20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental-health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

    21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

    22. Commit to finalizing mental-health-parity regulations.

    23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Sooooo, food for thought. Has anyone here looked at the probability of a person with a mental illness murdering someone with a firearm compared to a black male? If we're stripping rights from segments of our population because of potential futurecrime, shouldn't we be basing our actions on what the numbers show? I'd also like to know what EXACT mental illnesses disqualify someone from freely exercising their 2A rights. ADHD, PTSD, GAD, SAD, depression, Manic depression, autism(and exactly where on the spectrum is the cutoff?)...etc.

If we also look at the number of gun deaths, 2/3 of them are due to suicide(truth). Oddly enough, ~19,000 suicides are by guns. ~18,000 are by other means. there's a total of ~30,000 gun deaths. Soooo, if we address mental healthcare availability we have a better shot at saving lives.
