I'm trying to do this scouting thing, I'm really a novice at deer signs. Anyway, I did some walking around a new private locale today to figure out where to put my climber.

My questions is...Is this a rub? I think it is, but it seems awfuly big and deep compared to the ones I've seen before. The tree is soft though. Thoughts?

I have a tree that looks like that, it got hit by lightning a few years ago, its now weathered looking but back then it looked all fresh like that.

If you are serious about deer signs, look for their poop along trails.
Look at how fresh it may be - go to low areas and wet crossings along trails to see tracks - I could tell old tracks from fresh due to the rain we had Thursday. New ones nice and cut up, the rained on ones were eroded. Shot a nice doe at 12 yards that I could barely see through the grasses, cool stuff, i bet like in 'nam, no kidding.

Looks like a tree that got twisted from high winds. Where do you live and when was the last storm ? A buck will not do that kind of damage.

T-Rex rub. Be careful near there. :D

Lightning will sometimes blow out a small tree like that.
