357 mag from a carbine length barrel of 16" is Going to generate about 1200 ft pounds of energy, about the same as 556.

I have not a researched this, but I suspect these were issued along with 357 service revolvers back in the day.

My guess is the CHP members were offered a deal on a commemorative gun...I dont think that was an issued weapon..

I can't imagine it being an issued gun. Just the weight of the rifle for the caliber, and the fact that it is a single shot, doesn't make sense for a duty weapon.

After some poking around, I believe you are correct. There seem to have been on 2000 of these made, early 80s. This is truly a rare collectors item. From the pics it looks spotless.
