You’d think at least they’d make you pay the resident fee for your own property. As a resident and property owner you can hunt your property for free. I get paying the non-resident fee to hunt elsewhere in the state, but hunting your own property should either be free or at most the resident hunting license rate.

That defies logic. From the property owner hunting their own perspective.

Instate property owners don’t need a license to hunt their own land. But to hunt anywhere else in the state, they do.

It’s just a “you don’t live here any more” thing.

I’m guessing the logic is once someone has a license, even a non resident property owner, the individual can hunt anywhere in the state.

Think about this for a second, your from another state, hunting your own property and next thing you know your on somebody else without even realizing it. Or, you have to retrieve a deer that ran onto somebody else. Are you still legal once your across the line? Absolutely not, your hunting without a license and trespassing/ hunting without written permission or a license.
Things could get worse if you injure yourself or damage someone else's property unwittingly.

Yep. When you buy a hunting license, it's for all public lands in the state in addition to any private lands you are allowed to hunt.

It's also a deterrent to prevent folks from out of state buying up property to solely hunt on.

Not necessarily . Va ( and I think WV) require a National Forest Stamp to hunt on USFS lands .

Do what my uncle does...butcher your own and don't buy a license. He has property in Allegheny Co. He refuses to pay the state to hunt his own land. The only "negative" is that he can't take his deer to a butcher so he does it himself. NRP can't legally enter his (or anyone else's) property without cause so he's not worried about being "caught". He has lived there for over 30 years and never bought "permission" to hunt his own land.

    LOL Nice legal advice!!!!!!!

Per DNR, if you are a Maryland resident, you don’t need a hunting license. You do need a hunters safety certificate or predate the program hunting. Harvests must be reported, which I assume he hasn’t been doing.

Yeah DNR needs a reason to enter private property, but someone reporting he’s hunting there is legal cause. Or hearing a gun shot. Or observing someone hunting.

A Maryland resident that is the land owner is not required to buy a license. They do not need to live there.

You are not required to possess a Maryland
    hunting license if you are:
    • a resident of Maryland (or their spouse)
who owns property and who hunts only
on that property. This also applies to:
» The landowner’s children and grandchildren if they are under the age of 16.
» The landowner’s children and grandchildren, and the spouse of the children or grandchildren, regardless of
age, if the child, grandchild, or their
spouse lives on the property, or has
worked on the property for at least
30 days during the preceding 12
    months, or manages the property.
    (Each person must individually qualify
under these criteria. To qualify for this
exemption, a landowner does not need
to live on the property but must be able
    to prove ownership.)

A lot. They eat a few pounds of food a day.

The point is, he’s poaching when he doesn’t even have to, since based on description he isn’t reporting harvests. Though I suspect based on location and description he’s probably also at least exceeding bag limits and probably also hunting outside seasons.

But some people don’t really care about proper management of wildlife, other people, etc.
