If you buy a gun from a local dealer do they charge a transfer fee on top of them selling the gun to you, which in reality would be just the dealer making more money on the gun under these circumstances.

Not from what I've seen - they'll charge you the standard $10 MSP fee, but that has to be paid regardless.

Now, if you do a private transfer and go through an FFL, that tends to run between about $40 and $75 from what I've seen - better to go through the MSP directly if you can.

does MDS have a preferred FFL that does transfers for members at a discount or anything?

If you go to the MSP, it costs $10. You really won't find cheaper than that.
Be ready for a loooooong wait though.

With a private transfer, there is nothing keeping the seller from legally transferring the gun to you after 7 days, regardless of whether or not the MSP can keep up on their end. You'd have to have a cetain amount of trust in the buyer/seller with an agreement to get back together to sign the copies once the paperwork comes back, but it eliminates that long dragged-out process that you'd deal with going through an FFL, and it would save you money.

+1 on doing the transfer at a MSP Barrack. Most reasonable people usually vet the person they are selling to somehow i.e. club member, MDS member etc. I have sold several guns to MDS members and all worked out really well.
