Throwing this out to the brain trust here. Is there any law in MD preventing you from using 00 buck for self defense? I have a friend that’s saying it’s illegal.

Buck is not illegal. What you do with it may be.
Nothing illegal about it. Be mindful of what's behind the five or six walls it penetrates through if you miss, including neighboring houses. It's obviously not legal to injure or kill family and neighbors while supposedly defending yourself.
I have a shotgun specifically loaded with 00 buck for home defense.

Possibly because 00 Buck is not legal for hunting in MD. The ammunition is not outlawed and means nothing in a self defense situation, however.

Not only legal, there are few things as effective at neutralizing a threat. I wouldn't use it in a town house or if the prep has a hostage, but you get the picture.

Whenever someone says something is illegal, ask him to cite the statute that makes it illegal....

Seriously though, I saw something called "jungle shot" or something like that, had birds hot, followed by a couple 00 buck. Supposedly, bird shot would clear brush for the buck shot. Not too sure how that works in real life, was a cool looking she'll though. I may or may not have purchased some.

I have rounds that have 00buck and a slug.
