Portsmouth isn't as bad as people make it out to be(i grew up there and still have many friends that live there), ESPECIALLY when compared to Baltimore, Tappahannock even down towards Gloucester and Mathews is pretty nice
Chesapeake isn't bad at all either, or even parts of Suffolk

Whats wrong with Newport News if I may ask?

I used to deliver pizzas when I lived in the Tidewater area. The company I worked for had delivery places all over the area, including NN. I've had to bring up some dough from our shop up that way as I had a van, so I talked to some of the drivers up there. Not very nice neighborhoods, roads were horrible, and very few tippers.

OP, check out Mathews, VA and Gloucester. I used to go there on business and they are nice towns on the water. Not far from the ocean, country living, and you have Sentara and HCA hospitals not far including the bigger ones in Hampton, Newport News, and VA beach areas.

+1 for Gloucester. There are a couple great gun shops there as well.

I asked the Mrs where, excluding CA and MD, she might like to retire. I told her my sibs were talking about trying to end up closer to each other.

She said: Virginia Beach, King George, or in VA near Delmarva penninsula.

Where near Virginia Beach might be a good place to live / retire?

We have a kid who has twelve years of school before college, but Balto Co schools aren't wonderful, so we might move before he starts college. I haven't looked into VA colleges yet, so feel free to give any info. My bro went to VA Tech.

As a former (and hopefully future) Virginian, I really think the college situation in VA is better. Of course VA Tech is a great school for engineering. U VA is a great school as well. There is William and Mary and other schools like JMU.

MD has College Park, but beyond that I think the schools overall in Maryland are not as good (highly rated) or are much more expensive (like JHU). I really think Virginians have a wider array of higher quality choices at more reasonable prices.

Have a bud who lives in Chesapeake. Really nice area, though he's about to ditch Virginia for retirement near the Villages.

Proximity to health care is key as we get up there. That said, near Charlottesville would be a great spot. It's changed a lot since I went there 30 years ago, but still a great area, and as noted, there are some pretty decent public schools. Wahoowa!

I've heard it reported that UVA is harder to get into these days than Princeton.

I personally went to Washington & Lee and my son graduated from Virginia Tech. Virginia has a lot of good schools.

UVA has always been hard to get into, back in the 70's it was a reach for straight A students in Fairfax County High Schools.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm mapping each new one and have a thread going with the Mrs on FB.

She likes swimming (miles) and bike riding. She loves the beach. She hates our new coonhound and would like it to go away. She tolerates my having firearms that she doesn't see. She would go on the occasional motorcycle ride with me.

She's lived in Potomac, Australia, La Jolla, St Louis, Ohio, and now Reisterstown.

She goes to the Dr's a lot so we can't be out in the sticks. She takes the train to NY for one specialist and sees another in No VA.

Having an airport within an hour would be good for the occassional trip.

I think you each have to have your own home…yours with the dog in the mountains and hers with the bike (not motorcycle) at the beach.
