Awesome hunt....congrats. I have a question though....how do you get the whole bull back to the weigh-in station? It would take heavy machinery to lift that beast.

I'll have to take a picture of the picture print I have. The outfitter has a homemade cart they made out of sheet metal. 8 of us pulled the bull onto the cart and walked it to the truck. We then lifted the end of the cart to slide the bull into the truck. There is also a couple of outfits that drag them in sleds via horses.

I don't know that I "needed" one. But being my first elk hunt, on a very hard to draw tag, I wasnt taking chances.

So by some wild stroke of luck, I was drawn for one of the 26 Bull Elk tags in PA this coming fall. Any one on the board ever hunt Elk in PA? I drew in Zone 8.

How many years did it take for you to get lucky and what is the price range for the outfitters?

I drew on my second year (so they loved me up there, haha). A full week hunt only with the guide was 2500. 3500 if they provided food and lodging plus 100/day per guest. I was only able to be there the first part of the week so it was 2000 for hunt and lodging for me and my father.

All told, I probably have about 4500 wrapped up in it. 10 for the application, 125 for non res license, 250 for non res tag, 2000 for the guide, 450 for a new scope, 150 in ammo for practice and the hunt, 600 for the butcher (I was going to cut it myself, but got sick the night before the hunt and it was too much), 975 for the shoulder mount, and 250 to tan the rest of the hyde. Plus driving up and back 3 times.

My biggest complaint to the game commission is that they draw in August and the hunt is just over 2 months later. Leaves almost no time for budgeting and limited time for scouting. I had to get real creative with the finances to make it work this year. It's still far cheaper than going west, I just wish I could have planned for it better.

My guide just sent me this photo, really shows how wide this bull was. 50.5 inch spread.

    Great story.

    Thanks for sharing,

The expense info is especially helpful to new hunters.
It could definitely be done DIY if you had the time to go up and do some heavy scouting and acquire access to some private lands.

If anyone here ever pulls a tag up there I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

    Awesome Bull, Big Country.

Was this on private property or on Pa Game lands?
Pa Game Lands. If you are familiar with the area around Benezette, it was taken on the game land food plots visible from the Dent's Run Elk viewing area.
