    SENATE JUDICIARY

The Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. Bias against gun owners was evident as two gun-control bills pass out of committee and two pro-gun bills were killed. The hearing was a joke, with only gun-control advocates allowed to speak on one bill, all gun-control advocates and only one pro-gun advocate allowed to speak on another bill. I was allowed to speak on only one bill out of four bills! I must say that the Republican leadership was far more organized and evenhanded when they ran the General Assembly.

Here are the four bills considered:

SB1466, Obenshain, which exempts CHP holders from local gun-control, was killed by a 9 to 5 vote.

Voting anti-gun: Edwards, Saslaw, Lucas, Deeds, Petersen, Surovell, McClellan, Boysko, Morrissey
Voting pro-gun: Obenshain, McDougle, Stuart, Stanley, Peake

SB1430, DeSteph, removes requirement for a redundant background check to private sales of NFA items. Killed by an 8 to 6 vote.

Voting anti-gun: Edwards, Saslaw, Lucas, Deeds, Petersen, Surovell, McClellan, Boysko
Voting pro-gun: Obenshain, McDougle, Stuart, Stanley, Morrissey, Peake

SB1381, Ebbin, prohibits possessing or transporting a firearm in Capitol Square or into state government buildings (including rest areas). Passed by a 9 to 4 vote. Heads to Senate Floor.

Voting anti-gun: Edwards, Saslaw, Lucas, Deeds, Petersen, Surovell, McClellan, Boysko, Morrissey
Voting pro-gun: Obenshain, McDougle, Stanley, Peake

    -

SB1382, Favola, takes away gun rights permanently for a conviction of misdemeanor domestic violence. Passed by a 8 to 4 vote. Heads to Senate Floor.

Voting anti-gun: Edwards, Saslaw, Lucas, Petersen, Surovell, McClellan, Boysko, Morrissey
Voting pro-gun: Obenshain, McDougle, Stanley, Peake

    HOUSE COURTS OF JUSTICE

HB1992, Murphy, takes away gun rights permanently for a conviction of misdemeanor domestic violence. The bill was improved slightly to match Senate bill SB1382 as to which individuals are covered by the bill. But this bill is still horrible. HB1992 now heads to the House Floor.

Voting anti-gun: Herring, Watts, Hope, Keam, Simon, Sullivan, Levine, Heretick, Mullin, Bourne, Delaney, Guy, Scott
Voting pro-gun: Kilgore, Bell, Edmunds, Ransone, Leftwich, Adams, L.R., Campbell, J.L., Miyares, Coyner

BILLS BEING CONSIDERED IN THE HOUSE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE ON FRIDAY 1/29/21

HB2310, Runion, extends the acceptance of online training for CHPs to April 30, 2021. Expect there to be mischief attempted on this bill by the Democrats.

HB2319, Guzman, requires firearms be secured from a prohibited person living in the same home as a gun owner. This bill was changed in committee to be acceptable and VCDL is now standing neutral on this bill.

-Action items on gun bills that are still alive will follow in a future alert.
