As title reads...looking to load some BP/sub 2 1/2" 12GA hulls for a shotgun I'll reveal when it comes back from getting its makeover. I've never loaded BP hulls, just muzzleloading shotguns (which I'm extremely fluent with), and wad sizes vary. My question:

What gauge/size overshot and overpowder cards and fiber wad should be used to effectively work in the plastic hulls? I read 14GA somewhere...but I can't confirm anything.

Just in advance...I don't want to use plastic wads or anything else except traditional cards/wads. I will be roll crimping these and want a nice tight shot column, so the right size wad and cards is imperative.

What Blacksmith said , the Precision Reloading catalog is highly informative
They also offer their own instruction booklets for various specialised types of loading , including BP .

Try measuring the chamber and cone and then make product compatibility options a priority when you select the starting components.
Without knowing actual dimensions you may just be guessing or at least be able to have some intuition on what to reasonably expect.

For anyone who was curious about this?...the answer was as simple as I am stupid...12gauge components across the board.

Thank you for the follow-up. I'm getting interested in possibly acquiring an antique SxS hammer gun with damascus barrels. If I do, I'm likely to only use BP or low-pressure reloads, both both fiber wads. I'd love to hear any info about how yours shoots.

Damascus barrels = no smokeless, no exceptions. Pressure curves entirely different, and even through fluid steel from the time was often WEAKER than damascus, it's still not proofed for nitro.

Anyone who tells you it's ok to shoot smokeless is not going to replace your gun or give you a new one on their dime if they're wrong...just stick with BP or BP substitutes and a functioning, tight, safe damascus will last another lifetime.
