I misread the OP’s original post. Sorry. Thought cheapest. Windham does have decent ARs.

"FN 15 MD Heavy Barrel Carbine
This AR style firearm has a 16″ barrel that is made of hammer forged steel and has a chrome lined barrel. As the name of the model suggests, the barrel is a heavy barrel profile. It is a direct impingement gun with a carbine length gas system."

Boy ... you talk about a circus. Gentlemen, run what you feel comfortable with ... thats what makes American ... America. Not Socialism. Period. As for what gun to run ... run a gun that is going to run reliable and I mean you run a course that runs 3500 rounds in a weekend. Yes a little over 1000 rounds a day. You will be surprised at what will not hold up. Until you run the gun you have in hand as mentioned ... Shut The Hell Up

This was back in the early '90s so there was little to pick from outside of Colt when it came to AR-1 rifles. A close friend I worked with as a LEO was sent to a week long rifle instructor school. They did a lot of shooting but I have no idea how many rounds each sent downrange. My buddy said all the students either had an AR-15 (as he did) or a Ruger Mini-14. He also said by the end of the week those with Ruger Minis were all ready to break them against a tree due to malfunctions but all the AR-15s were chugging right along without issue.

He said it came down to using a rifle designed and built for harsh and constant use and one that wasn't...and it showed.

    Chf chrome lined? Nice
PSA used to sell complete uppers with these FN CHF CL barrels (1:7) for $300-350 a few years back (I got a couple - last one was circa 2015 for a preban receiver). I know PSA has developed their own barrel making operation since that time, but don't know if they still also source from FN.

Brownells was selling Colt 6920 barreled uppers for approx $500 a few days ago (minus BCG and charging handle, iirc).
