I'm looking for a rifle for post-election re-sale, or backup, or as a gift to my brother for Christmas potentially.

Thoughts on this DPMS carbine for $644?

I read the sticky on the builds and it seems like DPMS parts run from "avoid" to "eeeh" to "ok, but not great."

The best way I can put it is DPMS is a strong second-tier firearm. They are well matched for people who shoot on a regular basis, but not for people putting several thousand rounds through them on a carbine class weekend twice a year.

My experience with DPMS and other mid-grade (IMHO) AR's has been quality can vary wildly. Honestly if it were me and I weren't going to shell out the dough for a first tier gun like a Colt or a DD I would just get whatever's cheapest. Personally I would stay away from Freedom Group products altogether. But that's just my opinion.

I have a DPMS in .300 Blackout. It had some issues out of the box (FTF, FTE) but after a visit to Dr. Chad it's perfect. I agree with others that it's a decent medium grade rifle, but as we all know, we get what we pay for.

its not awful, the dpms stock is bad, but easy enough to change. also need a rear optic (not that expensive for a flip up, but 40 bucks is 40 bucks unless you've got a red dot or something sitting around. here is my experience with what started out as a dpms rifle... and now is a dpms lower with a dpms barrel and BCG. granted this was pumped out in the post sandy hook rush, and there isn't anything wrong with the parts, but QA is unreliable for them.

id recommend getting a windham weaponry HBAR for $749 shipped http://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperst...weaponry-ww-15-hbc-5.56-m4-heavy-barrel-rifle

or probably at an IP here jlowes he has it listed for $770 http://www.jlowesguns.com/WINDHAM-WEAPONRY-R16A4T-223556-HBAR_p_148.html

you also get a carry handle with the windham. but 100 bucks is 100 bucks.
