Wondering if anyone out there had used a 300 blk out for deer hunting? Any suggestions on type/grain bullet used?

300 blk has nearly the same ballistics as the 30-30, which has killed a lot of deer. I'd pick anything between 125gr and 150gr - depending on your barrel twist whatever your barrel likes the best (most accurate). Naturally you want a soft point or polymer tip to maximize expansion.

Nope, no one has ever used 300BO for deer hunting.

    Sorry

It works quite well. As mentioned, pretty similar ballistics to .30-30. Slightly less energy at short range, slightly more at long range, pretty similar 200yd bullet drop. Pretty capable as a 200yd deer round.

Got a deer this year with the blackout. BANG FLOP. 110 grain Barnes Black tip at 2350 fps. Buddy had same experience on an 8 point, same load

When I looked into it, this is what I saw was needed. Lighter bullet at high velocity to meet the MD minimum for Rifle.

    Unless you went AR pistol

    I shot a doe with 110gr Barnes, didn't exit at 70 yards...deer went 40ish yards and that's it.

Bullet did it's job for sure

Winchester offers 150gr polymer tip that is rated 1202 ft-lbs, ok by MD standards. Federal Fusion also offers soft point 150 gr rated above 1200 ft-lbs. Looking through MidwayUSA inventory, almost everything 150 grain travels 1900+ fps from a 16" barrel which is at or more than 1200ft-lbs MD minimum.

I am not recommending 150gr - whatever your rifle shoots accurately ought to do the job if you do your part. Main thing is that you need faster twist to stabilize the heavier bullets.

I believe this is the winchester you were referring to. It's pretty much readily available(not at wally world that I know of though). Worked like a charm and not terribly expensive. It was way more accurate at 100 yds than I expected when we were sighting it in.

Mine is a 1-8 twist 16 inch carbine gas and the 150gn bullets give me 1 inch groups at 100 yards from the bench. I have experience with the Barnes bullets, DRT, but not with the Winchester.

Main thing is to remember all these manufactures have the ft/lbs measured with 16 inch barrels.

    gotta make sure to compensate

i stuck with 110-120gr out of my 'firearm' with a 10.5 inch barrel and should be good to go based on my calculations :)

Use 125gr Hornady SST in a 300BLK. Took 3 deer this year. Two doe and a buck. All less than 100 yards. None ran very far. Didn’t recover the bullet from any.

For pistol its 700 ft lbs. DNR is not going to sit there and chrono your gun either. If it says so on the box, you are GTG.

Yup. Gonna be hard pressed to recover a bullet. They usually go clean through :D

if they understood ballistics at all and saw it was a short barrel, then im sure they would have every right to confiscate your gun for a more ample velocity test

ive been wondering since converting my pistol into a "firearm" (>26inch) would that mean i would have to stay above 1200 ft/lbs or would i be able to go with the 700lb pistol requirement route

It's interesting that they require 700 Ft # from a breach loader but only a 40 grain charge in a muzzleloading handgun. An almost full chamber with 777 and a wad in a '58 Remington even with a 200gn conical only gets me 550 Ft #.

Epiphany! Maryland firearms-related laws make no sense.

I will surely have to discuss this with the "Progressives" in the general assembly given that "Progressive" means pro-science. These laws were obviously written before widespread STEM education in the state.
